How do I cast a ballot in the next election when I am not in the US?
Thanks.

You basically enter the last state in which you were living and registered to vote, and follow the instructions. You should hurry a bit, though - they often want to receive ballots by 31 October.
My vote's hopefully already been received and is in the pre-count, helping to make the Romney camp even more nervous |

Go here: http://www.fvap.gov/
Depending on what state you live in you may be able to vote online, or by fax. Otherwise you will need to download your ballot and snail mail it back to the US. |

I registered by mail ages ago and received my ballot by email a month ago. I have printed it out and am about to go to the post office to send it off. Since my last address in the States was in Pennsylvania, I have to abide by the rules of that state. My ballot must be received no later than later than 7 days after the election, which this year would be November 13. Other states, of course, may have other deadlines.
I hope you can take of all this in time to cast your vote. Good luck! |

Yeah, Virginia stated 31 October. I also had to jump through some hoops like 'print the official mailing address directly onto the envelope - taped or hand-written will not do'. That was actually more difficult that it should have been, but I was determined....
I also had to have a witness.
But every state can have different rules. |

And I thought PA had some silly rules! I am allowed to "affix" the official mailing label to the envelope, and I don't need a witness.
On the other hand, when I received my voting materials by email (as I had requested), the idiots who devised the computer program neglected to include the actual ballot with the other materials . I had to use Google to find the phone number of my local County Board of Elections and then was able to talk to the very nice guy in charge of absentee ballots and voting. He told me he knew the ballots hadn't been sent and had complained to Harrisburg (the state capital), but they refused to do anything about it. He did send me the ballot by email, but I wonder how many other potential voters were discouraged by this problem and just gave up. |
