Just wondering the chances of a JET (government program ALT) being able to change their placement once they have been assigned it. I was just told exactly where I would be put and after doing some research on the area, I have some concerns about it ie. medical reasons Is this something I can voice to my co-ordinator and expect him to do something about or is it already set in stone? I haven't signed a contract with the contracting organization yet and people are still being notified of their exact locations. What are my chances that he will actually switch me? Also, what are reasons co-ordinators will actually see as valid ones to switch a JET? Will there be a higher chance if a JET drops out and I take their placement and the person from the alternate list takes mine?

Without getting too nosy, what are your medical concerns? If they are serious enough, I would think that JET would understand. You are supposed to have described any pre-existing medical conditions on your application form anyway, so they can use this as a reference.

"Your co-ordinator"? As in the person from the embassy, yes? Placement has *nothing* to do with them. Placements are decided by CLAIR in Tokyo.

If you have a valid medical reason that you declared on the forms and they missed it when making placements then there might be a chance of moving, but it's unlikely. If you're a municipal JET then the chances are about nil. If you're prefectural then the chances rise ever so slightly. The only thing you can do is contact one of the Programme Co-ordinators at CLAIR in Tokyo and explain it to them and ask.

Odds on they say no, however - it's easier for JET to simply replace you than to try and fiddle a change this late in the play.

I'm a current and chronologically old JET (which means over 25 for some reason). Unless you are absolutely sure that the placement you have been assigned (or to put it more accurately, the location of the contracting organization which hired you) will be really bad for your health, then your best bet is to come over and try it out. You might be surprised.

I'm about 99.9999999% sure that you cannot get your placement changed, for any reason whatsoever, before you arrive. You have to either accept or reject the position (rejecting it after being given a placement means you cannot apply again for ten years). If you arrive and can live with it, but it is bad for you (heat gives you really bad asthma or something, I guess- although heat is everywhere except in Hokkaido) then you can apply to change your location for the second year, but unless the reason is really good, then you will be turned down. If you find that you simply cannot live with it, you can always quit and an alternate will be called up, assuming you do so before September (but if you can get through until September then you're laughing).
