It doesnt seem to be particularly scandalous here-- I may have missed the constant beatings though. I think, if true, it might be found more in conservative, rural areas where the gender roles are very distinct and marriages are often arranged by families and men are given power over their families. Of course, domestic violence occurs in every level of society but from newspaper reports here, it seems to be more in the traditional, conservative east-- 'honour' killings by families etc. None of the men I know seem to be potential abusers. They are quite respectful and intelligent. I could be wrong though.

As a foreigner however, you shouldnt have any problems. You will be dealing with more worldly, educated people with not so entrenched views on male-female power-balances.

Please correct me if I am wrong-- I'm only writing based on what I have seen and heard.

I do have a friend here who was gang raped by Turkish men. However, if anything, I think many of the men I know are very naiive compared to U.K. boys. One of the worst things is that many older men stare at you as if you are a piece of kebab. But that's as far as it goes mostly. Most Turks have good morals and have been brought up to know what is ayip (shameful) and what is not. However, they do like to get some experience with the ladies of the old USSR and tourists 'up for it'. I think it is the same everywhere. I know of more bad things happening to my frineds in UK than in Turkey. However, many girls who visit Turkey do drop their drawers easily so no wonder foreign girls are all put under that umbrella. I dont know one foreign girl who hasnt been skewered by a Turk

I dont know why we forein chicks are being labelled as unusually willing to shag in Turkish men's minds. According to my male friends (and boy friend) their current or ex girlfriends jumped into the sack just as quickly as any foreign women (we're talking first or second date, folks)... the main difference being that they, um, didn't have standard intercourse but did oral and, well, the one dave will surely bleep if I type it out. This way they are still virgins and will not be shamed and forced into marriage.

Sigh. Love them double standards.
