Is a salary of somewhere between 20K-30K (US Dollars) enough to live on in Macau? How does salary/cost-of-living compare to next door mainland China?

Very comfortable, provided you don't try to emulate the lifestyle of senior casino executives 
Utilities charges in Macau are much higher than those in neighbouring Zhuhai.
Rents vary wildly according to the popularity of the individual estate; in Macau ordinary middle-class housing is more expensive; I don't know your tastes, but I'd be happy in somewhere costing around 5K per month in Macau.
As the Macau pataca (MOP) is linked to the US$ through the HK$, the currency is pretty weak at present, so consumer goods are often cheaper than across the border or in HK - just stay away from ParknShop supermarkets and Mannings/ Watsons stores: they charge HK prices, which are up to 30% higher than the going rate in local places. |

Sistercream has a much better knowledge of Macau costs than I do, but judging by what I know and what she says above, 236,000 would be fairly comfortable while 160,000 would be pushing things a bit. Around 200,000 is probably OK if you avoid the casinos and take things easy. Macau is a fair bit cheaper than HK (or certainly used to be when I used to go there for 3 or 4 weekends a year before the big casinos arrived), and I know people who survive quite well on around 200,000 HK a year (in HK). |

Perilla has it about right.
Unless the employer is paying housing and tax apart from the quoted salary, anything under 200K per annum would mean you'd have to scrimp in order to save.
If you're happy to live in a high-rise tenement (or walk-up), and generally live Local Working Class, then you could put away money even on 120K a year, but it's not a life I'd advise a foreigner without Cantonese language skills and local friends. |
