Many foreign teachers leave in disgust from Nanfang High School in Zhuzhou, Hunan province because of inconsistent and disturbing policies and orders from a certain Violet, who is the head of the school's International office. She will find every way to make life miserable for you, and find ways to deduct your salary and do things behind your back. For example, she deducted from the salaries of two foreign teachers after they showed English movies inside the classrooms, claiming that it is not allowed in the contract. But the contracts never stated this. Quite the contrary, the contracts said that the foreign teachers have the right to do what they feel is fit to teach students English.

By all means, if you're thinking of teaching at Nanfang, DON'T!!!! Violet is Evil or Very Mad

For those of you who have had discussions with Nanfang officials, don't believe their sweet-talking ways!!! They are liars and cheaters, and they will find ways to make your life miserable! NEVER sign a contract with them--they don't follow it!!!

i dont think any contract in china is worth the paper its written on. its only useful, if it serves their purpose. if they feel like ignoring it, they will. contacts are, in general, to protect the school, not you.

Yes, GM, you are expected to adhere to it. Or, more accurately, to their interpretation of it.

As a rule, you are probably right. At my school, they do seem to honor whatever is clearly written into the contract. The problem we have is when the wording is ambiguous - it always gets resolved in the company's favor.

It is real important to read through a contract before signing it and to resolve all ambiguous and double meanings before putting it into effect.

I agree with all of you. The problem with Nanfang is that not only is the contract interpreted in the school's favor but that the person who is supposed to "take care" of foreign teachers, Ms. Violet, actually finds ways to torment them with relish! She's evil and very stupid!

This just in from Nanfang: a foreign teacher was ganged up on by senior students and assaulted! The story goes that the teacher sent out several noisy and disrespectful students from the class; and when the class was over, these students waited for the foreign teacher to step out, then they physically attacked him.

It doesn't get any sicker than that!!!!!!

NANFANG SUCKS!!!!!!
