|
|
A bit of background. I have a BA, MA, CELTA and around 4 years of full-time teaching experience. My partner has a BA, CELTA, DELTA and has also been teaching for 4 years.
We taught in London for 2 years and are currently teaching in Spain. Our contracts finish up in June and we would love to go abroad again, but for various reasons, don't really want to make another year-long commitment. Does anyone know of a country where there are decent summer school opportunities which pay fairly well? I'm especially interested in Asia.
Any advice welcome! |

You can try on the China forum. They have summer schools there. I don't know about the pay or the hours but there are threads there on the same topic. I'd give you a link but the search function here is broken again. |

With the exception of China I think that you will find that:
a) your schedule doesn't fit with their academic schedules (end of academic year breaks typically run from Feb. to June - depending on the country).
b) most places that pay enough to cover airfare and visa expenses will leave you scant little left over for anything else on a short term contract.
In the case of China their breaks are different but the pay/visa issues are the same. Nobody will jump though the visa hoops to bring you in for a "camp" and pay anything more than a stipend for your time.

You can cross Japan off your list. |

Just to make it clear - when I say I want decent pay, I mean that I'll be able to break even after paying for my return flight, so it doesn't actually cost me anything to go there. I don't expect to make much money for just a few months in the summer, I know that's not realistic. |

Problem is that YOUR summer (June - Sept) is not the Asian school break (which, depending on the country in questions typically falls between March and June).
Additionally, virtyually no-one is going to go through the hassle of getting you a visa for 60 days of work.
Pick a country, fly in as a tourist and kick the tires is about your only option. If you are lucky you will break even or maybe come out a bit ahead.

I was offered a summer job in China. I would have just about broken even after paying for my airfare. This was in Qiqihar, north of Harbin, a few years back.
I wasa tempted to do it as an intro to PRC. |

the chinese uni summer break is usu. june 15-ish thru sept 1.
problem here is the 10 gazillion ft's already in-country that
want to supplement their regular pay.
recruiters will have you come in on a tourist (L) or business (F) visa.
volunteer organizations will be happy to let you pay for the privilege
of teaching over the summer. |

And what about elsewhere in the world? Any chance of summer work that isn't going to end up costing us money? |
