Thanks for all the help guys though I don't appreciate the comments about it not working with my girlfriend. You can think what you want and draw from your own anecdotes but please leave her out of this when you know nothing of our relationship other than our age.
I skimmed back and noticed only 2 remarks along those lines. Both were pretty skimpy statements, not scathing in-depth personal ones. Both were simple warnings to be prepared academically to support yourself, too. You have to understand that relationships abroad often do not work out, so if there was that tone in someone's post, it was probably due to experience. Please take that to heart. They've been there.

EDIT: Looked back a little more. Yeah, 2 people wrote about potentially needing to support a baby or "2 husbands later". The former was related to finances, while the latter was life experience talking. Nothing that harmful as far as I see. Don't take it too harshly or pessimistically.

I actually haven't read back in a few weeks because I was focusing on school. You guys are too pessimistic Razz
Look at it from our POV. Some of us have been on forums for longer than you've been in school, and we see drive-by posters a lot. Nothing personal.

I've also considered studying abroad, though I'm not really sure where to begin on that.
Guidance counselor? First thing to think about, as has already been suggested, is how you are going to finance yourself. Not only could tuition be higher than where you are now, but you may have to prove you can pay for all of it up front. Japan is like that, for example.

I noticed that you still have not started any posts in either of the China forums. If you're set on that country, you should really use those forums.

Best of luck.

Well, apologies if my comment about the relationship side of it was offensive to our OP, but I did actually pursue my TESL degree with the future plan of moving away back to my then-boyfriend's homeland. Pretty ballsy, I think Cool We are still together and have two children now, but I got lucky!

my belief is that we are not really qualified here to judge people's personal lives.

I like how you said that..and appreciate these words so much... There are so many people who just wont mind their own business.. its nice to see wise good people..

HUGE GIGANTIC NOTE: I have only read the first post about the threads owners comment. and SPIRALS. My words are honestly about people in life that I have encountered and WOULD love to strangle them at this very moment. extreme and sincere apologies to whoever feels offended..

NOte to the owner of this thread--

you said something about she keeping you going... my brother was like you. He wasnt even going to graduate from high school. Forget college!!!

He met his gf and she would just force him to study. Shocked i dont know how she did that.. so yea YOU HANG ON TO HER. At least she knows whats right and whats wrong. we need such people in life Embarassed

I have one last thing to share - with the hope it will keep you motivated..

my mother is almost 55 years. shes retired. UPtill today my mother keeps all of our degrees in a bag. Shes placed them in a corner where its says EMERGENCY- so its easy to snatch and run in case of fire or a disaster.

She always says its ok to lose everything but I dont know what we will do if we lose these- degrees- this is the only thing that will keep us on our feet in life and keep us going. She placed all our references in a separate bag just in case we couldnt carry them..I think she was also trying to teach us (my bro and I) a lesson on how imp these degrees are.

SO Im so happy you are concentrating. DO whatever you can just get that . I hope you will find peace after that. It is annoying until you get it but then things become better..

I smiled at your comment when you said you guys are so pessimistic. YAAY so happy your a bit more positive! When do you graduate?

Good for your mom and glad to hear she's well! As for your degree . . . . It's easy to replace a lost degree parchment these days, my former school (Carleton U in Ottawa) will replace a diploma with a notarized letter and $77.50 and most other schools have similar policies. Might your dear mother consider updating the contents of the family emergency bag? For example, my emergency flight bag currently contains a couple of hard drives full of valuable material, old family photos in albums, jewelery, silver coins and bullion and other artifacts that can't be replaced easily, or replaced at all !! Oh and a Pez dispenser. I don't know where I'd find one of those today.

BTW, does anyone know how to flatten a degree? Mine was handed over to a school official some years ago, who proceeded to fold it into a little square so it would fit into her small purse. I got it back some time later complete with uneven creases. Which setting on the iron will flatten but not scorch?

Good luck to everyone.

Paopaoduoduo

Its hard to feel enthusiastic about study when youre doing something you dont really want to do. Perhaps you could try to take further study (after the Associates) into a more enjoyable subject/major (maybe Mandarin?). You may not have liked high school but was there anything there you didnt skip? Sometimes its about trying something and seeing how it works out and if you want to pursue it. If you want to go to China, getting some fundamental language study done before you go would be well worth it, apart from needing a degree.

Part of the pleasure of being a student at uni is that its not like school and you usually have much more freedom. However, as youve chosen an highly intensive two year course, perhaps there hasnt been much of that?

7969

Youll have to flatten it a bit before laminating, wont you?

Ironing is an activity I avoid whenever possible so Im not qualified to give advice. However, I suggest you try the iron on different temperatures low to begin with and iron over a slightly damp cloth. You wont get the crease marks totally out of the document but youll flatten it. Failing this, what about the old fashioned ironing method? Put the document between the mattress and bed base and sleep on it.

Youre right artemisia.... I'll run a test with my iron and see how it goes. Thanks.

Yikes! Best to scan your degree and then email it to those who want a copy; they can confirm the original in person.

Anyway, if the ironing method doesn't work or you're worried about damaging it further, take your wrinkled degree to a print shop that mounts artwork for posters (uh, not forum posters). They'll have the proper equipment for getting the wrinkles out.

Okay, let's get back on topic... Smile

are you guys making fun of me??? Sad

come on .. in case of a disaster you wont have money to go take out and get new diploma. 77 dolars Shocked its a lot specifically during a period of disaster. you ll need it to survive??? I dont know. Havent been through one however the TV sure says a lot.

in my 7 yrs of working experience I was never able to spare a small amount of money... each month my salary went somewhere. it was either my grandparents, my parents, my credit card debt- my familys credit card debt- a loan I had taken from my brother , rent, etc. there was always a reason. there was always something that I needed to use the money. soon Ill be over with my current credit card. My next goal is a house. I DONT KNOW if Ill be able to achieve it but I want to get a house..but what I see from here is my stupd bro. credit card is on the way..and he has a plan to pay the gov. so he can have a shorter time to serve in the army...i think Ill be helping him as well... Im more than sure all of you have similar problems..your either helping family or paying up some sort of debt otherwise you are getting a house or whatever you need...

as for valuables you wont have a place to put those valuable stuff. they are nice things but where will you go with them.. I dont know...

these degrees are the only way to get money to get bread..

bah.. however you guys like.. Ill be away for awhile.

are you guys serious about ironing and stuff.

nomad excuse my ignorance but are you serious about the print shop- so far you ve been serious formal and realistic.. I would doubt your bad intention- i do look up to you and your significant sense of wisdom. how much would something like that be?

theres one more person I would like to respond to:

I earlier said none of us like our jobs. OK I CAN take it back HOWEVER

in my past experience I worked with rude, jealous, pessimistic, bad intentioned coordinators, principals, and directors of studies. All they did was torture me in making me redo work, take extra hrs etc. AND MUCH MORE.

Im not even going to talk about students who are rude.

All this has killed the desire and love to teach and reach younger minds. I assumed ALL of you went through this and most probably started disliking your job.

At this point I would love my own company and to really start doing work positively...

heres a note to the owner of the thread. WIth BA comes a lot of mistreatment.. can you imagine not having it? They would look at you and say you peasant come do this.. it is only the nature of human to be so CRUEL..

You guys sometimes annoy me.. take care.

To baabaa; it's too bad that this has been your experience, and it's understandable that you'd want out.

To the OP: this scenario is by no means the case for everyone in this profession.
