Sounds like a real grind, but could be great to break into that line of work.

I considered exactly the same thing before, but couldn't make any inroads.

I would say that I work in a similar way, as I must work very (very) intensively for 12-13 weeks, and then have 2-16 weeks off. But you are so burnt out near the end of your working period that you need the time off, and in some cases your head is only right...just in time to do it again. Wink

Please share more info if you don't mind (on board or via PM Razz ) and, lastly, is it safe? Shocked

ps. From all the research that I have done, it seems that those jobs provide something different (and therefore valuable), but don't pay much better than many of the more "standard" jobs.

If you're referring to salaries for TEFL jobs in the oil industry, then you need to conduct more research by expanding your scope of where those jobs are in terms of the best pay; the Mid East isn't the only oil-producing region. And as we just saw with Algeria, there are valid safety concerns depending on location. Moreover, not all TEFL jobs in the oil industry allow men to bring their families.

It depends on your priorities; only you can answer your own question.

Right, I looked around about 2 or so years ago, just before I got my MEd-TESL. I'm not up on current salaries; but I tried to look for jobs in Africa and others places also. I couldn't get much information on it, but from what I saw it didn't seem the salaries were much about $40-50,000 USD a year, on average.

About now I would consider it a hardship posting. I'd still be interested if it was not tooo Razz dangerous...and the pay and bennies were good.

24 January 2013, British FCO told British Nationals in Benghazi that they should leave ASAP for reasons of personal safety.

I wouldn't go to Libya. Its about to blow up again from the looks of things. There was always the very strong danger that Libya might turn into another Somalia; the west only fixated on removing one person and one regieme and claiming that they understood the situation on the ground inside out. The flip side of that coin is that once it turns out that there is a little more complexity behind the scenes than expected and the locals can't figure out how to follow the "how to setup a democracy 101 handbook" but making everyone stand in long lines and fill out forms all day long so they forget about their weapons and hatreds -- well, everyone just packs up and leaves and lets the locals sort it out amongst themselves.

sorry for the rant and if i sound bitter. but how many times do i have to witness this in a lifetime.

A friend in Libya has asked me to help with recruitment of EFL teachers to go there. I have doubts about doing this. What is the consensus here ?

For single men who are paid enough to take the risk... why not? While you or I may not think it is worth the risk, I've known quite a few TEFLers who seemed to thrive in places with... issues like this.

Hi Scot 47,

I would be interested in learning more about your friend recruiting for Libya. Unfortunately, I can't PM you yet.

I'd be interested in Libya, if the jobs being advertised on the net weren't so obscenely underpaid. I've seen around half a dozen jobs advertised post-war, and I have to say, I'm shocked at what's being offered. The salaries offered range from a 'high' of 27K GBP offered by Lang Sols to the absolutely shameful 12-15k offered by IH. Oh, and I haven't seen any of these job adverts offering single accommodation. It's all shared. Really helps you know where you stand. Holidays appear to be minimal too. 27K would probably allow for a fair amount of money saved, but in such a bleak and potentially dangerous environment, and with shared accommodation to boot...No thank ye!
