|
|
I'm curious what peoples thoughts are on whether or not the ESL jobs market here is growing? Do you think salaries are improving or getting worse? Are employers treating teachers better or worse? Thoughts on what the future will bring for the ESL profession in KSA? My feeling, and I've only been here for a short time, is that the market maybe growing. In Riyadh there's a whole new business district being built, which to me is an indication of growth. |

The market is growing but terms and conditions for teachers are not getting better. More and more desperadoes head to KSA as the global economy continues in meltdown. |

From reading this board for many years, my perception is that there are many more jobs being advertised, but the pay/benefits and working conditions seem to have gone downhill - a lot. More recruiters/contractors of dubious ability... and often not clear exactly what jobs they are recruiting for...
The other obvious negative is that these recruiters and contractors are not providing legal iqamas, but short term illegal visas which do not give you the right to work. This opens up teachers to situations where they have no legal right to go to the labor ministry with problems.

I can't imagine any worse terms or conditions than having to share a home with other ESL teachers... in Saudi Arabia of all places. Thanks, but no thanks! You'd have to be insane in the first place to accept that kind of offer. |

I don't see any problem really, just go find a job back in your own country that pays 3000 US on the low end that you can take back home with you after you pay your food costs and a few other things, with no taxes on top of that. |

I agree with plumpy nut. My flatmate and I are exact opposites, but the accommodations where I work are spacious, to say the least and we each have our own bedroom, bathroom and most importantly we have our own living area each a huge flat-screen TV. The kitchen and dining area are shared but this is not a problem. I realize that my situation is not the same for everyone, and there are some colleagues who have exactly what I have and still complain about having to share. |

This makes no sense:

You still have to pay for food and other things no matter what job you take.
I don't understand your rationale behind: 'that you can take back home with you.' Obviously if I were back home (as you suggest), what would I be taking back home and why? This makes no sense at all.
FYI, if I were back home, I would have the opportunity of making more than you suggest AFTER taxes and I would have more benefits and stability than working for some dubious contractor and sharing a home with some insane ESL Teacher or two. |

Why don't you just go home? Seems rather simple. |

Who does the cleaning, is it shared as well? |

Repatriation is never 'simple.' Some things take time. It's a discussion I'd like to have, but I am not the subject of this thread, nor do I want to be. What I do with my life is none of anyone's business. So let's drop it. |

Indentured servitude? Yes, modern day slavery is alive and well in the Gulf states. Human trafficking too. The slaves are so cheap, how can you resist? Maybe we can discuss Indonesia's stance on the topic, but perhaps another time. |

LOL.
The shared ARAMCO apartments in al-Ahsa were so enormous that I rarely ever saw one guy. In fact I thought he'd left until he turned up one time in the kitchen. The other guy, Chris, used to play golf in the corridor with an 'air ball'. Akhbar the houseboy did the cleaning, if you paid him.
God knows what this has to do with the job market getting bigger, but what the hell ... |
