Hey, I'm looking at TEFL jobs in Japan, and I'm currently considering a job with the Lang Education Center in Hiroshima for business English. I have not found any firsthand information about this position. Anyone here have experience here or know someone who does? Thanks. |

Hi there,
I hope my message isn't too late.
I will encourage you to avoid Lang at all costs if you can avoid it. I worked there for a few months in 2008, and it was the worst job I ever had.
I never got paid on time, not only that, but I never got a straight answer how late my pay would be. Usually it was about 2 weeks late, making it really difficult to plan things and even just get by.
On top of that, I was promised things at the interview (classes at University, no German classes for the first few months, being able to audit a few of the other teachers for tips on how to teach) that never transpired. Not only that, but when I asked for them I was bullied.
In fairness, I think my experience (at least of the bullying) was worse than that of my co-workers. But the late pay and really long working hours was the same across the board.
I know it's been 5 years and things could have changed, but things were bad way before I started (see this: http://www.generalunion.org/News/101?lang=jp)
and from co-workers I kept in touch with, also way after I left.
You are more than welcome to PM me for more info, or contact details on other workers who can give you a more nuanced account so you can make your mind up for yourself.
I will also be in Hiroshima at the end of April and am happy to meet you if you are there.
I really hope this is not too late, and I hope you have a good working experience in Japan!
All the best, Sofie |
