It is clkear that many who go to work in the UAE do not fully understand where they are going.

As is usually the case, the problems often tend to come up when people get in the middle of a collapsing marriage... even unintentionally. Another complication was that one of the individuals was not a Westerner.

Many don't realize that the Gulf liquor license is required for not only purchasing booze, but drinking it. Public servers in hotels and clubs are supposed to check your license before serving... but they rarely do.

As with those that often ask on here whether they can bring their significant other without marriage and live together. The fact is that many get away with it, but all you need is for something like this to happen. A neighbor or mate from work or anyone can turn you in and the laws will be enforced.

No, you're right scot47,
the UAE isn't like Essex at all...
it's much more like Royal Ascot...

You can hardly blame the victim. Let's get things in perspective. She was only having a drink. It could have happened to any of us.

One wonders if she was aware of the laws... and if she wasn't, why not? She must have been aware of his split with his wife.

My common sense would tell me not to be in his flat without other people around... in particular because he was Arab and most likely Muslim. But, I suspect that it requires a year or two or three to learn the necessary level of paranoia.

The laws are pretty transparent. Enforcement is not always. However, the rule of thumb is that police WILL act on a complaint - this lady got caught not because of intent but of circumstance. Unfortunately, this won't matter to the authorities.

I notice that you are male... assuming that your screen name is accurate. Your comments reflect a lack of realization that things are VERY different for females in the Gulf.

Mature adult females had better know how to protect themselves or they can get into situations like this - ignorance of the law doesn't get us out of punishment in our home countries either.

It was just your last comment VS, that puzzles me, where you stated that the woman in question must have been aware that he, the husband had recently split from his wife.

How would she or could she have known that?

Could you expand on this point a little more?

Thanks.

I like this statement. So true on many levels. May I borrow it? Smile
