I have recently begun tutoring students to help them pass the IELTS test and I like the job. All the students use the Cambridge book for studying for the test. What I'm wondering is whether or not there are any materials available to help me learn how to teach test prep? Others of you must do this type of work so how did you learn how to do it?
Thanks.

DG - Is there a teachers book to accompany the students book? That probably has some relevant tips that should help. Never taught IELTS but Id imagine the book (with teachers guide) is more than enough. |

Have you thought about using the descriptors to help you with the productive skills: http://www.ielts.org/pdf/UOBDs_SpeakingFinal.pdf
I would be banding them for speaking and writing and then working on pushing them up at least one level for at least two of the modules (modules being either pronunciation, fluency, vocal and grammar). That way you are showing them you are helping them progress.
Reading and Listening is harder to teach but probably requires a bit less attention from you anyway. |

Australia Network has a bunch of stuff on the test--three series of streaming videos for free, 10 minutes each, which deal with different aspects of the test. If you look at season 3, you will find that there are some basic overviews and some good general information about the test that may be of use for you in terms of getting an overview of the test itself and what is expected.

Thank you for that, there's a ton of useful stuff on that site both for IELTS and general English that will save me hours of searching in the future. It also gives my students a chance to hear the good old Aussie accent, which can only be a good thing. |

No problem, there are also a bunch of downloadable study notes and activity sheets for each lesson, covering the skills and IELTS components etc. as well as online listening comprehension tests. The one thing you cannot download are the actual videos direct from the site. You can get them through torrents if you don't mind using that kind of thing.
It is an excellent site, really comprehensive, and I use it a fair bit when I do IELTS teaching. |

I use a Firefox plugin called DownloadHelper. It handled all 24 of the videos with no problems. It let's you save different formats and quality too. It doesn't work with every site, but it works for most.
Thanks again for the info. |
