The woman who fought sanctions against South Africa, who condemned Mandela but backed Pol Pol and Pinochet. She drew her battle lines according to wealth and privilege, her policies didn't reward hard work, they rewarded wealth. Let the rich get richer, and they did. |
She fought sanctions because they would have effected the black population the most, when Mandela left prision he came to No. 10 to personally thank Lady Thatcher for her hard work in helping to secure his freedom.
She came form a background that had neither wealth nor privilege, fought against those that had it constantly in her own party. Well done for not understanding a thing about the Lady, I wouldn't expect you to understand her policies either. |

Assuming you mean affected, she fought the sanctions because it would have had an economic impact on the UK and money was the only thing that mattered.
If you did mean effected then I don't understand your point.

That tells me far more about him as a statesman than it does about her as a person. No doubt Pinochet had a lot to thank her for as well, over one of their afternoon tea sessions I would imagine.

Indeed, and yet proved to be a viscious persecutor of those in her wake, much like a rabid ex-smoker.

I suppose that depends on your definition. She most certainly fought for equality between those with old and new money. She worked hard to ensure the privileges of wealth were not reserved solely for those born into it, and she also fought hard to extend those privileges as far and as wide as she could. Perhaps you consider that to be one of her great achievements.

I'd like to give my view about "Teflon" Mandela, but every time I do that on a public forum, I get censored or deleted. |

Just like to echo your sentiments Phil K on first page, well said sir! There is in my mind no greater politician who came to power in this country in peace time. She transformed the country from benefit scroungers to get off your backside on your bike go getters. Kinda ironic and funny how its gone full circle since she left! |

"Ding Dong the Witch is Dead" has reached #1 in UK iTunes following an online campaign by people who are celebrating the death of Britain's only female prime minister, Margaret Thatcher."
I suspect the buyers are not big fans of hers.

Dear Sasha,
So, the Iron Lady was done in by the Iron Maiden. And that image is clearly NOT photoshopped

Iron Lady, Iron Curtain. So much iron nonsense. A Man of Steel is always more formidable... |

Actually, the vast majority of people on benefit are not the unemployed, but working families benefitting from tax credits and child benefit (for example); and pensioners.
I find the whole "skivers vs strivers" debate disgraceful. If you're unfortunate enough in the UK today to be poor, ill or disabled, you're fair game, it seems, for "punishment".
And it's equally disingenuous, in my view, to state that before Thatcher we were all scroungers. Her economic policies devastated manufacturing industry and put millions out of work. There was absolutely no attempt to regenerate communities or provide alternative employment. So Tebbit's "on yer bike" soundbite was insulting as well as far off the mark.
Undoubtedly, some people did very well under Thatcher. But whether you are pro or con (and you're obviously pro while I'm obviously con!) it's remarkable, I think, that the mere mention of her name causes such great divisions still. I think you and I can probably agree that there are few politicians capable of polarising public opinion to such an extent. |

Exactly! There are people (and Marmite!) that you either love or hate, and people with whom you are indifferent. There is not greater compliment for a politician to be equally loved and hated. That means you are a conviction politician immune to those who disagree with your sincerely held views. Dennis Skinner is about as far to the left as I am to the right, but I admire him for his conviction, as did the Great Lady. I believe he was pretty fond of her too! |

Dennis Skinner!! I can't remember if he's also known as the Beast of Bolsover or the Right Honorable Member for Baghdad. |
