A few questions:
1. What's it like living there? Safe? How are the Western restaurants and food selection in the grocery stores?
2. What's a reasonable salary if living/working in Kuala Lumpur? |

Kuala Lumpur (KL) is safe for the most part although there are sections you would best avoid at night. Many western expats live there and there are many outlets catering to them. Western companies and products are everywhere.
A decent salary would run above RM5,000 per month I would suggest. Avoid the expat ghettos and eat local food as much as possible to make it on that local salary. |

Can someone who lives there or has been there give me some insight of what to do for a week and where to go.
I have some vacation time and need to get away form the cold.
Also any hotels can be recommended for the $30-60 a night range and where?
Any help or links is well appreciated! |

Hi Kungfuman,
In KL, some places worth visiting are the Batu Caves (a few miles out of town), the national museum and the botanical gardens. Also worth a look is Merdeka Square ( some interesting Moorish-type buildings are in the area ) and Chinatown ( sometimes referred to as the Jalan Petaling area). In Chinatown there are quite a lot of good outdoor restaurants.Do a google search on other things to see/do in KL.
You mentioned that you intend to spend a week in KL. Although I like KL, I think that a week is a bit too long to spend there ! Three or four days is enough time, really. If you intend to spend a week in Malaysia, apart from KL, consider going to either Georgetown (Penang) or Malacca for three or four days.
You also enquired about accommodation. When I'm in KL I usually stay at 2-star hotel called the Citin Hotel, located at ( I think) 36 Jalan Pudu. The hotel is right opposite the Pudu long-distance bus station. The tariff at the Citin is around 50 USD per night, and includes a Western-style buffet breakfast. The Citin is within walking distance of Chinatown. (You can make a booking for the Citin through Asiarooms).
In the same area as the Citin there are a number of cheapish hotels as well as backpacker places. There are also cheapish hotels in Chinatown. Do a search on the Asiarooms site.
Enjoy your stay in Mlaysia. I'll probably be there in either mid or late January 2013.

A flight to Tioman Island from KL is highly recommended, the place is beautiful, perfect for snorkeling, diving and chilling out! |

The goal is... KL for 3 or 4 days, then a trip to Langkawi.
HOWEVER my Chinese credit card doesn't work on the Airasia site so I couldn't book the flights.
Looks like I will have to figure ground transport to Penang then ferry to Langkawi. (is the plan.) |

Hi Kungfuman,
Did you see my reply to your HK query ?
I'm surprised that you couldn't use your credit card to book an Airasia flight ? Was it a Visa or Mastercard that had been issued by a Chinese bank, or an actual Chinese credit card, or what ?
Anyway, there is a regular ferry service from Georgetown, Penang to Langkawi ( doo a google search for departure times). It is no problem travelling from KL to Georgetown - there are many buses that leave from the Pudu long-distance bus station ( I think that it takes about 4 hours or so, forgotten actually how long).
You had mentioned that you only have a break of 7 days - couldn't you have it extended to 9 days, thus enabling you to spend a couple of days in Georgetown ( interesting place ) ?
Regards,
Peter |

I have been searching KL and related areas. I booked 2 nights in Penang and will try to go to Lankawi as well. School schedules have me back to work on jan 2 so I need be home Jan 1.
Seems there is a problem with my Chinese credit card and online security that I am trying to figure out. |

While some time has lapsed since the accomm discussion, I will throw out the question about the Cameron Highlands ... My friend and I have booked a hotel in KL for 3nights starting on the 29th. Then we take a bus/train to the Cameron Highlands. No accomm booked there yet. Any suggestions? Max of 3 days, maybe just 2 nights. Clean and budget, but open to a new (aka more expensive) option.
TIA. |

KL. Visit the police museum
Highlands. When you get off the bus (if you survive the cliff edge road), loads of people will have hotel leaflets.
I forget the name but there's Catholic run place. The owner is a real lad and will make sure you see the inside of every bar....up to about 5am. |

PS - Take a fleece jacket when you wander up those hills.
As cold and wet as Manchester. |

We were in the CH almost 2 weeks ago. Quiet. Cool. NOT cold - I am a Canadian. Refreshing as compared to the sweat in KL.... lots to do .... |
