In their desperation people want to pursue the Yellow Brick Road that leads to the Big Rock Candy mountain.
I still get questions from unqualified non-graduates about getting teaching jobs with oil companies in the Middle East.
People are reluctant to part with their illusions. Out there, you know there is treasure !

There is gold out there! Just be a charisma man and you'll see, and oh yes, if you polish that tarnished lamp say a good 10-12 years you may not get gold - but you will get something bronzy. In ESL we have to settle for the spoils of being a charisma man (that can be nice), and something that is just good enough - bronze - not gold. |

Nearer to the specific query: A school I worked at took on somebody who had taken one of these weekend courses. He couldn't cope and left quickly, very quickly, and that was in spite of additional help from me in preparing for his lessons.
When you do a 4 week course, you still only have the very basics; if you do an online or a weekend course, you are just not prepared. Full stop/period. |

These 2-5 day courses do not teach you to teach. They are designed as a product that will make money for the provider. About the only purpose they serve is to give you a sense of the field, a chance to explore whether TEFL is for you. You can decide that it's not a good match without the expense of a month-long training course. Or you can decide that it is--and then you'll still need training.

That's the tip of the ice-berg mate..the Guardian is currently running an ad for unpaid voluntary work in Austria. YES....AUSTRIA. You can teach in Austrian secondary schools for the princely sum of NOTHING. You know that country with one of the highest standards of living on earth. Seen it all now. Disgusted. |

Maybe on the weekend course they will learn the difference between an adjective and a noun ?
What can you do with wannabes who have no grasp of basic grammar and have never learned even the elements of a foreign language ? |

Dear XieLin
Well said.
I am amazed that people go for these things and wind up on daves to complain about how bad it was, what a waste of money it was, and that they cannot get a job even in a language factory on the outskirts of Moscow.
Get a CELTA or Trinity Cert and nothing else.
Regards
John |
