Having read fluffyhamster's post on one of his worst classes where hangman was used as a particularly poor warmer, I thought it might be of use to list what your default warmer and/or filler is.

We all have those moments where inspiration has gone on holiday or where time seems to have been procrastinated away during our lesson prep. What warmer do you use?

I use a simple categories game which can be adapted for any theme.

Write a few categories on the board. Get the students into groups. One person from each group copies the categories.

Things in the kitchen Types of food Countries

Teacher gives one letter from the alphabet and students in their groups think of a word for each of the categories.

bowl burger Bulgaria

Once they've written one for each, they put their hands up or call out and they get a point. Simple and fun. Obviously the categories can be changed depending on the theme of the lesson or the level of the learners.

Anyone care to share?

Here's one for higher ups:

The Question Game (an improv warm up)
Rule 1: You must respond to a question with a question.
Rule 2: The question must relate to each other conversationally.

The one who responds with a statement loses.

Example:
A: What's the weather like?
B: Don't you know?
A: Is it still sunny or did it turn cloudy?
B: Why are you asking me?
A: Didn't you not just come in from outside?
B: Yes, I did. <--- B Just lost.Laughing A wins. A, A, Hurray!!! A, A, Hurray!!!

Right lads (Arabs)...it's Thursday....you can all go home.....just leave in ones and twos and don't tell anyone. I'm off to the Marriot bar. Oh and you'll all pass.

You dislike teaching English that much, or just your students?

Mingle activity - pass out small 'find someone who...' cards to learners. All cards bear same inscription: "Find someone who doesn't want to be found."

Favourite warmer: Jameson's Irish Whiskey, only in moderation though..

Favourite warmer in the class, not being able to say any word that you can divide by three, so a group of students will say in turn:
1, 2 (clap hands) 4, 5 (clap hands) 7... until someone makes a mistake and has to sit down.

@sasha's comment sounds similar to the old joke:

How do you confuse a stupid person?

Actually, it is a warmer based on research into existentialism. And on Jameson's, hic!

But it is more of a whole class than a warmer...

I was under strict orders to use somebody else's "plans". No deviation allowed.

Hmm, warmers. Not a great fan of them myself (cool-downers/slight time-fillers are another matter - I like word games), as a bit of topical chat usually suffices, but a bit of deep breathing allied to a few karate hand moves can be useful to wake a class up. Once they've mastered the wax-on, wax-off drill, they can even help clean the windows.

Anyone familiar with the adjective/descriptive card game Perpetual Notion? You could make your own cards or use none at all--just a pen and paper to list what others contribute.

Quote:
Bounces, Round, Easy To Use, Folds. A word game where players add successive words and must identify something that fits the building description. When challenged, declare what you were thinking of (a trampoline) and if the others agree, you score points.

Hmm, wonder what the intent of those 'strict orders' was. Question

I use a bell like the ones you get in hotel receptions and review homweork with a quiz. Appoint Ss to ask next questions and act as a scorere. Cool

They kids love it and it is quite stress-free for the teacher. Cool Cool

Did you work for Interact? Very Happy I hears they have very strict policy on doing everything by the book! Shocked

Another good warm-up: competitive brainstorm. Choose the topic: "animals" and have the Ss in two groups with mini-white-pads. The aim is to write as many animals as possibl.e

Use a stop watch and a bell like those you find in hotel receptions and give points to the winning team. Cool

As you go along in the game appoint Ss to be stopwatch and bell gaurdians and also scoreres! Cool

from that link, FH wrote:

I would've apologized and told the agent that at least they all learned the hidden curriculum. All in all it's just another... Laughing
