Geez. One of my fellow teachers suffered through a bout of typhoid last year and was hospitalized for a week. Good luck! |

I know how this will sound but please believe me when I say that I am a teacher who gives 100% most of the time at least in the class room.
I worked in Indonesia a good few years ago and always vowed to come back. Well now I am in a position to realize that aspiration. My financial situation after a few good years in Japan has been transformed. To such an extent that I no longer need to save any money from any salary that I would earn were I to land a job in Indonesia.
In fact truth be told I am looking for a job as much for the work visa, social opportunities (NO not dating students) and to give my life structure as a pay check. So a pleasent work enviroment and a light teaching load is what I would value most.
So where do you think I should look? Do you think I can find a job with less than 20 contact hours a week?
Thanks for any help. |

i also prefer no more than 20 hours teaching per week. I dont like it that much, but it pays some bills. I like the classes (only adults) but I despise working for Language companies (except Direct English, and American language Canter, they are great). Unfortunately there is the manpower tax and KITAS issues. if you dont work full time you will need a business or social visa to stay more than one month in Indonesia. Even then u will be teaching illegally. Also the pay is modest, 100,000 rp per hour generally. also there is the travel issue if you live in Jakarta. travel can add 2 hours to the session, cutting your hourly rate considerably. |

I also ate at filthy looking holes in the wall, left Indonesia with an iron stomach - funny thing was when I went back to the UK I threw up immediately after eating Fish & Chips (after dreaming of these for 2 years). Wouldn't mind but they cost me nearly 5 pounds!!! Maybe it was the price that shocked my system
man, if you get sick in Indo you really get it 'no holes barred' |

I've only had the odd occasion where I've been sick in Indo, and only one lasted more than a night. Was sick for a week or so a couple of years ago though. Fever, ulcers which meant I couldn't eat properly, diarrhoea....I lost 7kg! I reckon you're more likely to get sick eating western food there though, as it's not always prepared properly. |

Once Again.
majority policy at National Plus Schools is to hire REAL teachers.
That means you have to have a teaching diploma.
Sometimes there are exceptions and they also prefer women.
Also you are expected frequently to teach other subjects - maths, science, and maybe (if it is a christian school) take bible class.
these are the facts.
give it a shot if you want, I did and failed.
god bless those pagans |

I know of expat teachers who do not have teaching qualifications working at national plus schools! I know of one International school that has expat teachers without teaching qualifications! Don't sell yourself short!
The fact is , if you are professional and competent, you are a possibility. also you need to conform to the authorities and be totally professional in your work. In saying that, I worked at an EF school for 2 years that was totally professional! |
