| I am not sure that I would want to live outside a compound. In the 1970s I did, but that was a different world and a different KSA. |

I lived outside compounds all my time there, right up to 2003. And, when when started bombing and shooting up the compounds in the early 2000s, compound living (and dying) seemed even less attractive.
There's some wisdom in the old joke: "Scatter, one grenade'll get you all."

I also have never lived in a compound and never had any problems within the general population.
I guess compound life is suitable for families and perhaps single women ; makes them feel secure and protected, but I tend to agree with John. I think compounds are over rated and are just a little too obvious.
Mind you seems every villa is a mini compound...high walls upon walls.... and bars on all the windows...more like prisons or guilded cages...what's up with that? Peter peter pumpkin eater???? Perhaps Saudi cultural, tribal & religous customs are too difficult for most (westerners) to grasp and/ or accept...just too much of a gap to bridge for many...it is what it is...
To each his / her own... what ever makes you happy and can afford |

Advice:
Stay locked in your rooms. Order your food in. And if possible, don't go to work.

| Brings to my mind the whole question of collective nouns. We have a swarm of bees and a flock of sheep. When discussing the hippos of Pablo Escobar (see Google passim) the question arose in the Cantankerous Curmudgeon Club here of what we call a group of hippos. |

Dear scot47.
A group of hippos is known as a herd, pod, or bloat.
Love that "bloat."
And, to anticipate your next question, a group of rhinos is called a crash.
