I have been genetically blessed with a wonderful pair of Chicken legs!
I guess I'm good to go then... you'll never see me in shorts!!!
It can be 100 degrees outside, I'll still break out a chino or track pants. |

funnily enough, just yesterday, I saw a saudi guy coming out of a shopping mall with shorts above the knee.
Would a kilt be okay? |

I don't think the mutawa usually go around with a measuring tape to check the length of men's shorts...LOL knee length is just an estimate...
Wear a kilt just to see the reactions.... add tall socks and I don't see how 'they' could complain about showing any skin... |

My first thought was 'why not' in a culture where the men traditionally wear 'dresses'?

"Would a kilt be okay?"
Sure - if you don't mind being kilt.

| Actually, the crux of the issue is that showing too much skin is a cultural taboo here. I occasionally see women whose eyes cannot be seen and wear black gloves, even when it's 45 C outside. We as foreigners enjoy a more relaxed tolerance. Our women may not need to cover their hair until advised to do so by the "Police for the Prevention of Vice and Promotion of Virtue". Foreign men are tolerated in shorts as long as they are of the "lower classes" or are clearly exercising or on the beach. A man with white legs and shorts above the knee may get away with it for a while but eventually will run into trouble. When in doubt, cover up and look respectable. We are "guests" in somebody else's house and they are not amused at our common custom of displaying the better and more attractive parts of our bodies. |

| Shorts to the knees are not unacceptable. Anyone who gives you trouble about is probably just ignorant rabble with nothing better to complain about. The prophet himself (PBUH) encouraged wearing a short thobe to show humility. Anyone who has ever been Jeddah will tell you that pilgrims there wear only two coarse garments to cover their flesh. This often means overweight middle aged men leaving little to the imagination. Again you may wear shorts anywhere you like in Riyadh, I have for years. |
