I was looking at the job board and saw some positions for $8,000 - $9,000 USD per month is this for real?
I know someone that got an offer of $60,000 a year all allowances included and I thought that was a lot considering he only had a BA and CELTA and 2 years experience.
I mean $8,000 a month is more than some physicians make in the US after taxes.
So are salaries going up and why are they paying so much? |

Where did you see this?
I think the above salary is for medical consultants in hospitals, or managers in banks. |

It may be an ARAMCO recruiter. In that case, this number includes everything... salary housing and other benefits.

Yes. ARAMCO contracts via recruiters seem to be in that range this year since it is expanding its workforce due to saudization efforts. Therefore, they need lots of English trainers. So try your luck and get those apps in! |

Do not be tempted by the worm on the line. Aramco recruiters will dangle any old figures in their advertising and then offer you a sum that isn't even half what you applied for. If you challegne this, they'll swear blind that the advertising was nothing to do with them. Well, to a certain extent they are truthful because the advertising is done with recruiters who arrange interviews for the contractors. But they're in bed with each other anyway and both out to make as much money as they can at the deal. If you can't beat them join them...
My advice is this: figure out what you're worth and don't take a job for less than that. Be willing to turn down anything they offer you below it.
It is not worth coming to Saudi if you are going to be reminded at the end of every month that you are not getting what you feel you should be. There's just too much other crap to deal with.
So, make your mind up and stick to it. I had nothing to lose. After refusing two offers, I was eventually asked to name my price. They accepted it, so here I am. |

and yes, don't forget that an annual review based pay rise will be a percentage of your base salary so it makes sense to start as high as you can negotiate. |

The ad indicates "relevant" full-time English teaching experience. So what constitutes relevant experience in terms of teaching at a medical college or oil company. Perhaps that average monthly salary quoted likely reflects the pay for those with ESP, specifically industrial skills or medical domain teaching experience. |

Perhaps Aramco is paying this type of salary, but an 'average' salary for new recruits for university in Riyadh seems to be below 12K, unless one has been renewing every year. So I don't think the salaries are increasing, on the contrary. |

In real terms, salaries have been decreasing for a long time. |

Prices are certainly going up and quite dramatically recently. I go to the supermarket every 10 days or so and always spent about 200SR. That's now 270SR buying the same stuff. Everyone is moaning about it. |

Jaffa, to qualify for the %00 Club, you must mend you ways ! Youe profligacy can only end in tears and grief !
Here is a thought for you all
In 1970 when I went to my first job in KSA at the age of 23, a graduate teacher in UK earned 600 a year. My salary in KSA was three times that figure. Salaries are now about equal for a beginning teacher in the Uk and a teacher in a lower paid EFL job in KSA. |

scot47, I guess you meant the 500 Club?
BTW, do these club members still exist in the Magic Kingdom?

Before or after tax?
And how much was the tax on the salary in the 70s, scot47? |

oops Yes 500 Club. The Club ne er has existed but is used as a way of poking fun at misers. No shortahe of them - the ones who steal toilet paper ratrher than buy it, and eat with the Bangladeshi cleaners rtaher than spend money for lunch.
50 a month before tax, NI and superannuation deductions was the teacher's salary in 1970. My first job in KSA paid me 1900 SR a month plus housing allowance. Exchange rate was different then. If my menory is right it was around 11 SR to the UK. |
