Good idea to follow the advice on this thread.

You cannot have too many applications on the go.

Fill in your time by putting out more applications.
I mean it.
This is a brutal business and you can't afford not to catch the hiring wave getting underway now.

Yeah, I expanded my search to include several provinces around Guangdong and applied to all the public universities there. In total I've sent to 52 universities: heard back from two and was rejected from two as they are not hiring this year.

Accordingly, it looks like the last week of May and the first week of June will be new contract time for our school. It will be two weeks of a rush to re-new, interview and hire new teachers.
I can't wait for summer vacation!

Ah, this would explain why I haven't heard a peep from most universities. I thought a few days ago I missed the hiring wave or something.

Talking about that I nearly got to the interview (Skype) stage for one university that I mentioned earlier in Fujian. However, I sent her dates and times I was free for an interview and a few questions (8 small questions) about the role (there was no contract details on the university website) and bam! she never got back to me. I guess I did something wrong Sad

Keeping consistent contact with the schools you are interested in is important.

When you say that what exactly do you mean? I've sent a email to all the universities applied for about a week a go stating how my application is going and its current status... I got one response out of 52 universities. I am planning to send another out again later next week.

The good unis/colleges state in their contracts that they will discuss re-signing with current teachers 90 days before the end of semester. The hopeless uber-disorganized ones such as mine specify 30 days.

This means a huge number of schools won't have any idea who is staying, who is leaving, and hence how many new people they need to sign up until around late May or early June.

Many are hiring now, but there will be a mad rush two or three weeks from now as the slacker ones try to get replacement teachers lined up before summer vacation. Have all your documents ready, because if you blink you'll miss this hiring period.

The final hiring time will be the last week of August/first week of Sept. when schools realize certain teachers they've contracted have bailed over summer, or replacement teachers they've hired have fallen through. At that time they'll need people ASAP - preferably those already in country.

I've got a couple of seemingly decent, fairly well researched uni jobs on the backburner until I can be 100% sure in the next week what I want to do next semester. If I end up sticking at my current job I'm happy to put up their contact details here and people can contact them directly.

Does every teacher there get an apartment like yours?

My campus apartment has a repugnant green swamp out the front window, and a pyramid-sized trash pile of rotting egg shells and meat bones kindly deposited by the food stall owners in Bacteria Alley out the back. A collection of endless fornicating, mangy dogs with overloaded titties dragging on the ground roaming around chasing the endless rotation of scabby cats and their babies who I'd almost guarantee wind up on the menu back at Grandma Yu's Kitchen. Shrieking Chinese neighbors picking their noses 24/7, Mr Shen strutting around in his Y-fronts cursing out his wife and grooming his 6 inch long mole hairs like a proud father, e-bike alarms going off left, right and center, a perpetual weird farty smell, fireworks in the stairwell scaring off the invading hordes of cockroaches.
Surprisingly I actually really enjoy it.

Can't wait for those contact details !! Very Happy

This is true and there will be another hiring spike in Dec for Feb start.
At my last school we took on 2/3 teachers during the Fall semester. One from the US and two I think who were local at the time.
The take home message is that things change quickly.
The Chinese have little concept of the logistics of moving internationally and the investment in time and upfront money we put into the project.
Don't quit your job sublet your flat or put your car into storage until you have your visa.

Haha - actually it'd be the contact details for a couple of *other* jobs I'd researched and been talking to FAOs and current teachers about.

This is DEFINITELY TRUE of the I.S. where I work as well, although our Boss is pretty good about working within a 40 to 60 day window. That was not true my first year here, however ... when the teachers who were not brought back were notified right at the end of the year. Not very professional.

Also very true. We generally have at least one new teacher interviewee / demonstration lesson for a possible new hire around that August/September window. Right before the new school year begins.

To the OP ... if you're looking for a job at an International School, drop me a PM ... our school is expanding rapidly and we are on-target to have about 10,000 students in our Main School section and roughly 250 International School students withint the next two years.

If anyone knows a couple of native-English speaking, qualified teachers who are experienced and F.E.C. eligible ... feel free to send them my way. We have a couple open spots and the job is a very good one.
