the question is whether a) accommodation is readily available and b) this amount is enough to cover your keep on a decent compound (or outside) and enable saving.
The answer would appear to be yes? |
a) yes
b) yes |
thanks for your reply, Space Cadet... |

the latest info from my sources about accommodation that's part of the package at KFUPM: if you're married but with no kids, be prepared to be put in a one-bed flat or bring a big suitcase to use as a spare bedroom.
it's only having children with you that apparently qualifies you for anything larger. |

Accommodation at KFUPM is perfectly acceptable - for singles, couples and families with children.
You expect to get 2 bedrooms ? What is this = one for you and one for the wife ? Maybe you are hoping to bring your mother-in-law along with you ? Or you require accommodation for the servants ? |

So, I've been offered an interview for ARAMCO via a UK recruitment contractor and them via Al Hoty.
However, TQ seems like a much better deal - less salary but you don't have to fly back to your home country immediately for a medical - and if you do after 3 months they cover all expenses.
Plus they give you free accommodation + a car + free transport to Bahrain at the weekends.
Seems better.
I don't really want to head to the interview in Manilla (from Cambodia) when I could get a job where I can be interviewed on skype (TQ) and fly straight to Saudi without having to go to the UK for the medical etc.
What's your advice? |

Well us Space Cadets obviously have a higher standard of living than you were used to here Scot.
Hey, don't take my word for it, nor your own. Take it from the mouth of someone who was complaining about the accommodation there just last week.
Now, which bedroom shall I sleep in this evening.... |

There are many factors to consider with these two offers. If you have no dependents then either offer will be suitable. With dependents then you might want to not consider coming to Saudi at all... but I digress.
At the moment, they'll interview anyone who's interested for Aramco because student numbers are up and they need teachers. Al Hoty are probably the best of the many contractors, so you are starting off on the right foot if you want to go the contractor route with Aramco.
I'm surprised that TQ can get you a work visa without a medical before you arrive in Saudi. I suspect they'll bring you in on a business visa and then send you to Bahrain. If you are going to be here three months without an iqama there is a lot that you cannot do (including get your own transport, top up a mobile phone, open a bank account, get into a compound etc.) You will be here working illegally. You may never ever actually get an iqama and you will have no legal redress.
I also would question what they mean by free accommodation, a car and transport to Bahrain. I would want evidence of what they will provide. It might be completely awful or, even worse, complete fantasy. Do you have any contacts there? Can anyone on this board vouch for their offer?
I assume therefore that you are considering a TQ location in Khobar due to the proximity to Bahrain. Don't forget that if you do go the Aramco route, you can request the Dhahran location allowing you to actually live in Bahrain and commute or at least get there regularly under your own steam.
Sure, a trip back to the UK is inconvenient. But what seems convenient in the short term may turn out to be entirely inconvenient in the long run.
My tuppence... |

thanks, that's really helpful.
yes, I have a friend there with TQ now. He's impressed so far. I'm not sure on the quality of the transport. I'll ask him... |
