So, this was the text message I just received. Yes.......TEXT MESSAGE. Apparently high school boyfriend/girlfriend break-up procedures have invaded China and professionalism is on the decline. To make things even better, today is my birthday. So what a wonderful present that was.
And i'm ok with the fact that they are bumping me out because another FT's wife wants to work here because she is way more qualified than I am....MA in English with experience teaching English Writing in America and they are both awesome people so that doesn't matter.
I'm not too upset about it because I wasn't planning on staying anyway. I'm more upset about how disrespectful and tactless they went about informing me that they didn't want be back, but that is typical of this school.
But now i'm placed with a moral dilemma. Next month is the last working month and I should get paid salary + bonus + airfare etc etc. This school is completely inept and so I expect they will pay me everything at the same time probably early June.
So the question is..........do I get paid and run? Or do I do the honest thing and finish the exams "for the children"? |

I don't see a dilemna. If they're going to pay you then you should stay until the work's finished. Doing otherwise might justify any shoddy treatment you feel you've been given. That you're even thinking about cuttin out early is telling Maybe they were right?
Dont screw it up for the next guy, and go out on a good note. |

Don't give 'em the final exam results until you've got your airfare and other stuff.... |

Take the high road. Do the honest thing. etc. Sure the text message was tacky but at least it was direct. You can still find other uni jobs if you want, so they didn't screw you (although earlier notice would have been better.) |

I agree. Direct information is much better than no information.
I worked at one school that led me to believe that they wanted me to stay for the next school year. Then that June they told me that they had decided to not renew my contract.
I changed schools, and then the first school called me twice the next school year asking me if I could return.
Don't take it personally. It's not you, it's them |

I should have made it more clear. I'm NOT staying in China any longer. This is my last year and i'm going home after this term anyway. So finding another job here isn't an issue and I could frankly care less if they are "justifying" not renewing my contract because they will look for any justification anyway even if it comes down to "He didn't say hello to me on the bus that one time even though we've only met one time for 3 minutes." They had a negative opinion of me from the get go because I had the audacity to ask for someone to pick me up at the airport when I first arrived and I declined judging a English competition. |

Nah ~ he's just venting after a crappy way to get "laid off". Always sucks to go out on their terms rather than your own. As long as they're sticking to their end of the contract you should stick to yours, but it certainly does leave a bitter taste in your mouth.
And yeah....happy birthday! |

I recall a Seinfeld episode that described someone exhibiting this behaviour as 'a bad breaker upper'.
My advice is do it nicely, if only to make sure you get your letter, airfare and final pay. |

don't screw your students because your employer is impolite. it's not their fault that happened. |

In these situations, students become cannon fodder. |

It is not you but the school. Some employers don't know what they want, or they just think short term. I worked at one school for one year and then left to go home. I wanted to return to the same school a year later; they said no "we want another teacher." Three years later, I at the same school, and they with three diferrent teachers, have asked me to return several times.
Complete your contract, get your money, and leave. I know a guy in Anhui looking for a teacher. P.M. if you are interested. |

OP,
Do not listen to the person telling you not to ruin it for the next guy. S/he is just being selfish and self-centered. Do not worry about your students. They'll be fine. Look after yourself. If you don't, no one else here will. China is the law of the jungle and nothing you do or say to help the next guy or or students will change that.
And follow your intuition. If you think they're going to screw you on your final salary and airfare, walk.
Also, the suggestion to hold on to your final grades until your final salary is paid is excellent advice. I had to do the same thing with one college that was getting stupid with me. Once the salary was received I submitted all of my grades. |

Wow...reading comprehension...ummm...
The OP stated he would get his full pay, airfare, etc. BEFORE the end of the term. His "moral dilemma" is whether to take his full pay and ditch the school early because they disrespected him by sending him a text message. Sigh.
In his words, "Professionalism is on the decline..." Yeah right, kettle. I kind of understand why they are letting him go. |

This advice is all well and good unless you're the next guy the school hires. No surprise some schools don't trust laowai teachers when they have people who are prepared to bolt for no good reason. This is probably where some of the really stupid clauses in contracts come from, curfews, no visitors in school owned flats, probation periods.

This guy is asking if it's ok for him to screw his school over. Gee, I can imagine the responses this thread would have gotten if it were a DOS or an FAO asking if it were Ok to screw a teacher out of a months pay, or worse. Yeah the guy could be venting but the text message hardly looks like smth to get upset about especially when you had no intention of staying anyway. Looks like this school made the right call not asking him back.

Not much leverage there. If a school really wants rid of you, they'll just refuse to pay you and make up their own grades. Everyone likely gets a pass anyway.
