Two points, two questions.

I was told my contract cannot be renewed because my boss has a letter written to him from the local police station stating that because of a complaint, they will refuse to give me the residency paper to renew my RP. And the reason? During a law class, talking about stereotypes, the class asked me, 'What do English people think about Chinese?'

'Well....' I calmly said, taking a sip from my water, 'I would imagine the normal English person would think x y z' , some were positive, some were negative, but it was the truth.

One of the students ACTUALLY went to the local police station to complain. I cannot fathom why a student would. When I was a student I wouldn't want to waste two of my own hours reporting this behaviour. And the fact the police FOLLOWED IT UP! How many times have I been screwed over by Chinese, and didn't report because I know the local police will do nothing!

Anyways, carrying on, my contract finishes 31st of July, my new job starts 1st of September.

Is there anyway to 'bridge' the gap? I'm assuming in August the new place will have to apply for the FEC.

The new job is in a different province, does this entail cancellation of the FEC in this province, and getting a new one in the new province, then applying for a new FEC? Can I 'switch' RPs with say a business or tourist visa sandwiched between?

Thoughts on the first part, answers for the second too please!

On the first part, I'm a firm believer that what people write and how they interact on this forum usually seeps into their attitude in daily life. Reading your posts over the past few months you don't seem to have much good to say about your time in China. Your experience above and your repeated use of "wu mao" to refer to posts made by people who don't see things your way (you used it again today in the thread on unusual things laowai believe) are further clues as to your attitude. Maybe your students and boss picked up on those vibes and acted accordingly? We've all said things in class we wish we could take back, but I don't think too many people get reported to the police and fired for them. Maybe there's more to your story than you're letting on?

On the second part you'll probably get five different answers and what actually happens won't resemble any one of them completely. I made a similar move a few years ago, but different provinces, different time, different people. It'll all work out I'm sure Very Happy

You normally need a release letter for a province to province move. I have needed them for intra-provincial switches as well.

You cannot normally convert a tourist or business visa into a Residence Permit so the answer to your second question is no.

To switch from Employer A to Employer B you need to do the following:

1: Employer A Issues a Release Letter.
2: Employer B takes release letter and other documentation (including a new medical) and applies for a new FEC.
3: FEC, medical and passport are submitted for RP (Employer B).

You must submit your RP under your new employer before the current one expires. You cannot submit your new FEC application or RP application ealier than 30 days prior to the expiry of the current documents.

Now, this is going to vary a bit from province to province.

Also, discussing international perspectives on China doesn't get you this kind of treatment. I simply don't believe it to be the genuine cause of whatever is going on here.

your new employer needs to get you an RP before the old one expires.
once the current one dies, you must return to your homeland to start
from scratch with a z-visa. you don't want to do that.

you gotta get the new contract signed and sealed.
you gotta get registered with the local police.
you gotta get a new health exam/certificate in the new province.
then you gotta get the new fec.
finally you can apply for the new rp.

i did it two years ago, moving from kunming to hainan. it all took much
coordination with the new fao to get everything done within the time limits.

police registration takes an hour at most, can be done the day you arrive.
the healthy check can be done the same or next day. pay an extra hundred
rmb for express service......exam 9am, pick up cert at 3 pm, apply for fec
that afternoon. it can take up to a week.......but if your fao is clever,
the foreign affairs guys were notified to get the booklet ready....just need
to show up with passport and healthy check to get the fec stamped.
next morning drop off passport at psb, get your rp in about a week.

i don't remember if the old school had to (or even did) cancel the old fec.
maybe the new one was issued, which resulted in a letter to yunnan
province to cancel the old one?

What you mean Javelin is, because I don't agree with your pro Chinese posts, that's a bad thing?

It's called free thoughts. And there's no more, stop digging. The letter specifically referred to the 'speaking of beliefs of stereotypes of the Chinese people by foreigners.'

Perhaps you, like other Chinese nationals, should toughen up with regard to people criticizing your country?

Getting everything done before my current contract expires will be tough because I am traveling until the 18th of July, nightmare.

sorry, i made a misteak.

you don't need to have the new RP when the new one expires, but you
must have applied by then. your new RP will be in process. o'course
i wouldn't want to wait until the last day to apply.............

A student once reported me to the administration for saying that I do not like the local food because it is too oily and salty.
Not liking the local food apparently equals not liking China, in some people's minds.

I moved provinces a couple of years back and it would have worked out, but I had already made plans to return to the States, so the RP switch got canceled and I had to apply for a new z-visa. More money and trouble for me and for the new school. Avoid that hassle if you don't mind staying a bit longer in China in the summer. What was posted by Guest Bob and choudoufu sounds about right.

Thoughts: I also think there was more going on than what was stated in the letter. The letter is just to make it official. Selective enforcement. I'm not Chinese, by the way.

Maybe he was just looking for the easiest excuse to let you go.

Agreed.

I needed a day off to go and get my wife's visa, guess what I did?

I TOLD my university class the reason, they said it's ok, I said 'When shall we make it up?' and they asked not to, so we simply didn't have a class.

I told them if they inform my boss I could be in trouble and they might be made to take extra classes, so in my university the information goes solely through me and the head of the class moderators. My boss never knows.

Since you're not coming back he probably does know. You had a job that required you to work a grand total of 3 hours a week yet you still had to take more time off to get your wife's visa. Add up a few instances like this and I can see how you wouldn't be invited back.

Of course, but I also participated in speaking contests, playing badminton etc. with the students and helped the university interview students.

Of course, I could be like your fellow countrymen and bang students, non dependent on age.

The new school is your best ally here.
Put them into the picture.
They think they've filled a vacancy and will not want to use valuable holiday time trying to get a replacement.
I left a school on not altogether harmonious terms a few years ago.
They started getting cute with the release letter and I relayed this to the FAO at the new school. Fortunately it was in the same suburb.
The response was 'leave it to us' and I didn't hear anything further although the nasty idiot at School One did phone the private school out in the boonies where I was doing a summer school gig.
How he found out I don't know.
The owner of the summer school said she'd never heard of me, even though I was sitting in her home drinking coffee.

Just to make things clear, my boss and the FAO are completely behind me on this one, FEC returned, release letter, top recommendation letter, airfare, 2 months of summer salary etc. all paid up, whatever I need.

So it's not like they think I've done anything terrible, otherwise they wouldn't give me these things.

The letter and anything I need[helping the other school] will not be a problem.
