I have just completed my CELTA and wanted to work in Saudi Arabia. What would the be the minimum salary I should accept should I receive an offer. I have a BA and CELTA with 1 year teaching experience.
Also any tips on finding my first job?
Thanks |

I assume your BA is unrelated to TEFL, and your recent CELTA means your one year of teaching experience was gained prior to receiving any supervised teacher training. Anyway, no one can say what you'd get; your quals are very minimal to say the least. Take a look at the ESL Cafe's job board (link below) to see if you'd even qualify for any of the posted jobs. Many of the ads indicate salary. Frankly, most newbies head to Asia to build those first few years of experience.

My first gig after getting my CELTA was Saudi with the exact same credentials as you, the salary was certainly at the lower end of the scale! They prefer experienced teachers there for good reason.
I've also worked in SE Asia (Korea and China) and the salaries, savings and work conditions are not to be sniffed at. In China you should aim for RMB10k, in Korea 2.1m won. If you're careful you'll save $1k/month without difficulty in either. There are many sites advertising jobs, try Dave's, tefl.com, serious teachers and Waygook. |

Hi JustinC,
Thanks for your reply. What was the company/agency you applied through? Where were you teaching? |

Yes, I would recommend doing a year or two in Asia first. You will be teaching (as opposed to baby sitting) and you will have a life.
Thailand, Korea and Japan would probably be places worth checking out. |
