Hey guys, I'm doing my masters at HK Polytechnic University this September. However, since I'm an international student and will be doing grad school, I don't qualify for the student residences so I have to look for my own place.

The campus is located in Hung Hom, Kowloon, which I heard is more expensive to live in. Are there any affordable private hostels or furnished temporary accommodations around there I could stay in for a couple weeks while I am looking for a permanent place? I don't mind if it's older or smaller, as long as I have a private room, it's clean and well maintained.

I'm planning to look for an apartment around TST, Jordon or somewhere along the Hung Hom train line. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Just search for furnished apartments. Can be as low as 5k a month.

For the first few days, you could do worse than checking out the oddly named Bridal Tea House guesthouses - they have a couple around the PolyU area.

You've heard that Hung Hom is expensive, so you're planning to look in adjacent districts which are equally, or even more, expensive?
I'd look in the opposite direction, to the east - To Kwa Wan, Kowloon City. They're not as well known- most westerners aren't interested in mixed working class/ industrial areas. They are still very safe at all hours - ALL of Hong Kong is very safe by world big city standards - and have excellent public transport.

Don't get hung up on needing to be near a rail line - the bus services here are even more comprehensive and economical (and you have a better chance of getting a seat).

Hey guys, thanks for the replies! I was able to find a hostel in TST and I will keep looking around to see what the different areas have to offer.

serviced apartments are quite affordable and practical compared to most other big cities - tiny though! I used www.i-house.com.hk I think and stayed in Causeway Bay - paid about 8000HKD a month for a clean, modern, fully functioning shoebox with a comfy bed and a hotplate, kettle, sink, wifi, TV and shower. It was fine for 2 months.

Hey thanks for the reply.

The price definitely seems very reasonable. How quiet was it and how thin were the walls? I'm a fairly light sleeper so I don't want to be able to hear all the noise coming from next door or outside.
