Politely enquire what is the final date for submitting grades?
Don't threaten to withhold them but give them a 'sniff' of the possibility.
Getting the assessment out of the way to let students concentrate on other things is good, but it doesn't mean they need to see their grades early.
Make sure your airfare refund is secure as that is likely to be worth more than an unwinnable fight over a couple of weeks pay.
Go online and slag the hell out of them once you're off campus. |

| My RP with uni A expires 30 June, so I have to go to the city where uni B is located before 20 June (according to the FAO at uni B) to apply for the new RP. |
Only in Wuxi was I required to accompany the school's FAO when they attended the PSB to apply for my FRP, and when they returned to collect my passport. Wuxi PSB apparently requires the foreigner to be present.
In Chongqing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and here in Zhejiang, the FAOs got my FRPs without my participation (apart from handing over my passport).
In Shanghai, I was required to accompany the FAO to the local police station to register my residence, but that's a separate process.
So, why not just send your passport to the FAO at your new school and have them send it back to you when the FRP has been issued (which takes a minimum of 5 days in my experience)? You could then stay on at your current school until Friday June 28 (I'm guessing that your school won't actually require you to stay until Sunday).
And don't be paranoid about sending your passport by (registered) mail or courier. Just about every foreign embassy in Australia offers a visa application by mail service (not everyone lives in capital cites). |

| ^ I went though this in Suzhou a few days ago. My presence was required only for a photo. Other than that I wasn't needed. (Rp Renewal) |

| The new uni is in Suzhou. The FAO there told me I had to be present for the application of the RP. |

Wuxi and Suzhou; both in Jiangsu!
You mentioned that you have considered the possibility of traveling to Suzhou and then returning to your current school.
How about half of the idea I proposed?
Make a quick trip to Suzhou for the FRP application and then return to your current school. After the FRP has been issued, can your new FAO collect your passport and courier it back to you? |

| It's certainly a viable option. Can I board a train without my passport? |

Sure about that? Henen to Suzhou is not a day trip thing. |

| The new school said my apartment should be ready. If it's not, I can stay with a friend. |

Ok, good answer. If you have specific questions about Suzhou send me a pm and perhaps I can be of assistance. |

Photocopy the main page of your passport and your current FRP.
Ask one of your students to write on the bottom of the photocopy, "This is a photocopy because my passport is currently with Public Safety Bureau for renewal of my residence permit. If you require further information, please contact <name of your new FAO> on <phone number>." [这是一份复印件,因为我的护照与公共安全局目前是我居住许可证续期的. 如果您需要进一步的信息,请联系 .......] |

New development: the FAO at my current school told me if I stayed until the 20th, they would give me 2/3 salary, which is actually quite nasty, as the original situation was that I had been asked by the new FAO to arrive before the 20th (and my current employers know this).
Anyhow, I got the OK from the new FAO to arrive on the 21st, so I have the 2/3 secured. However, according to the "leave" article in my contract (quoted earlier) I'm now clearly entitled to the full salary. I have quoted this article in an email to the old FAO; should receive a reply tomorrow.
Thanks for the great suggestions so far; kungfuman, I will pm you with some Suzhou specific questions once I get this ordeal settled. |

An intrinsic element of 'leave', be it maternity leave, annual leave, compassionate leave or study leave, is that eventual return of the employee is implied / anticipated / planned.
If an employee has no intention of returning to the workplace then it's not 'leave'; it's cessation of employment.
I don't think that the 'leave' clause of your contract applies to your situation; it would only apply if you were planning to return. |
