I will probably move to Taiwan soon. I'm 40% through an online MA in Linguistics with a focus on TESOL. I understand that degrees with more than 50% online credits are not recognized by the Taiwanese government and are useless in obtaining university positions (which need a PhD anyway, so I've read). But can an online degree be useful in Taiwan in other schools, such as English language institutes or private international high schools (by "private" I mean not government run)?

I'm hoping to find a job somewhere other than Taipei.

Thanks for any information!

To the best of my knowledge the Taiwan government does not recognize any kind of online degree. It might help you to get a job because an employer might see you as being more capable, but it won't help you in terms of visa sponsorship. Hope that helps. Good luck!

Ah, I see. It's about qualifying for a visa. Thanks.

Jimtheman,

That's right. Qualify, and you are in.

I have a JD from the States, which I imagine might qualify me, but not for teaching English.

Jim,

It's all about qualifying. And if you have a JD, I'm sure you will qualify.

Just give it a shot.
