|
|
Hi all,
Where would some of the best places for someone with a Masters degree in teaching with teaching certification be? I know it's a broad question but some places to start looking would be helpful. I've been hoping to teach abroad and am now thinking it is best to wait until I'm done with my degree... which countries will the degree actually do me some good in? I would rather teach at a local school than an international school with foreigners' children.
Bonus points if my boyfriend could also find a job there, who has a B.A. but no teaching degree.
Thanks! |

This thread, "Would a masters in English mean anything?" addresses the same issue (http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=102462)
I can't comment about your boyfriend's prospects---you didn't provide any info about his degree major, TEFL cert, and teaching experience. |

Thanks for the link. I never have good luck searching the forums for some reason.
My boyfriend has a BA in business, and a TESL certificate (not from a big-name in certification). I know that makes it more specific/tricky when considering both of us. |

In short... Asia.
Taiwan: He can find legal work in buxibans... you can work in public schools.
He will earn about $2000/month and no benefits. You will start off at about $3000 + a full benefits package that includes medical (for both of you, housing, generous vacation time and airfare).
Hong Kong: Net program for you and language academies for him. Similar to Taiwan in terms of net SAVINGS and quality of life.
Korea: Same. Work in public schools. Potential savings in the $10k/year EACH.
China: lots of work. Better remuneration packages are found in "internationally accredited" programs. Again, comparable SAVINGS and quality of life when the remuneration package is looked at in terms of the local economy.

Great list, tttompatz. Thank you! I haven't heard of "internationally accredited" programs when talking about jobs in China, so I will look this up. |

There are great jobs for teachers all over Asia. Some of the schools pay very well. Even some schools in SE Asia pay around 50k + housing and airfare. Now getting those jobs is tough to say the least. So reckon on a starting job in the 30-40k range (feasible). That should include free housing.
Now that is for a teacher. The boyfriend actually makes things harder. A lot of international schools aren't going to get a visa for a boyfriend (ok most won't). So he will have to do his own thing and that could be challenging. I'm sure he could find some sort of work in most of those countries, but a regular job at a school probably won't happen. |
