Is there are limit on how much one can exchange from RMB to US dollars in Hong Kong?

No, but if you change more than a given amount (10 or 20K, am not sure), you can be required to provide a paper trail to prove that you aren't money laundering/ drug dealing/ involved in other illegal activities.

Money exchange places are everywhere, from banks to booths (no fewer than 10 of the latter in the nearest shopping centre to me).

The money limit is HKD.

I may be wrong, but if changing from one foreign currency to another in a neutral country (HK in this instance), you will face two conversions, losing money each time ie. conversion from RMB to HKD, then HKD to US$.

There might be a limit, so just exchange a few thousand dollars each time. The fees are either non-existent or very low.

Go to the second floor (first floor if you are a Brit) of Chungking Mansions in Kowloon. The very best rates and you can change directly from RMB to dozens of currencies; no hassles.
