No, but if you change more than a given amount (10 or 20K, am not sure), you can be required to provide a paper trail to prove that you aren't money laundering/ drug dealing/ involved in other illegal activities. |

Money exchange places are everywhere, from banks to booths (no fewer than 10 of the latter in the nearest shopping centre to me).
The money limit is HKD. |

I may be wrong, but if changing from one foreign currency to another in a neutral country (HK in this instance), you will face two conversions, losing money each time ie. conversion from RMB to HKD, then HKD to US$. |

There might be a limit, so just exchange a few thousand dollars each time. The fees are either non-existent or very low. |

Go to the second floor (first floor if you are a Brit) of Chungking Mansions in Kowloon. The very best rates and you can change directly from RMB to dozens of currencies; no hassles. |
