Thanks NS. I'll be speaking with the soon-to-be former teacher in the next day or two to clear up any uncertainty. Then I get to play the waiting game for paperwork....trying not to get too excited just yet.

Remembering back to my first gig in Feb 2004, I really had to grit my teeth over the last few weeks of the process.
Once you have your passport stamped, it will feel a lot more real.

One part of the contract troubles me.

The fact that they can move you to any campus they want is troubling. Living in Chengdu and living outside Chengdu are two totally different things. If it is a shuttle to another campus that could be ok but you may find yourself travelling 2-3 hours a day both ways for 1-2 lessons. Up to you if that's ok or not. Personally I would want to make sure where my accommodation is at and where my work is at.

Yeah, I would hate that but I just spoke with the current teacher and apparently there's no travel involved. One thing he said that contradicted an earlier post was that docs DO have to be mailed vs emailed. Can anyone confirm? This is Sichuan province.

Do not, repeat, do NOT mail any of YOUR documents (passport, diplomas) to China. You can email copies. Hand carry the real things if absolutely necessary. If that doesn't satisfy your prospective employer then look elsewhere. Your employer WILL mail to you the documents (such as the invitation letter) needed to apply for your visa.

Just wanted to get the apples and oranges lined up.

to clarify previous post:

YOU don't gotta mail anything to the employer. everything can be
done with scanned copies/word documents.

EMPLOYER gotta send you via EMS original work permit and
visa invitation.

YOU gotta take that stuff, along with your passport and original healthy
check, to the embassy to apply for the work visa. (unless you fedex
a package to a visa service, and they will apply in person for you).

I applied for several Sichuan jobs this round and was advised with most of them that there's a new rule in (only for now at least) that province requiring your original degree to be presented at the PSB in order to obtain the visa. Came from enough different sources to make me genuinely believe the foul stench of additional bureaucracy is in the air. Perhaps that's what they are thinking of when they say you need to physically mail your crap.

You get your Z visa before you come to (mainland) China... not from the PSB. So, while it MIGHT be true that the PSB would want to see some original documents, that would be when they are processing your Residence Permit and by then you will be in China.

True. And by the same logic it's the PSB that requires a medical check in order to get the RP, yet many (most?) schools these days require one to be done in advance before even starting the application process. As do most embassies now in order to issue the visa. don't apply too much rationality or common sense to the process or you'll be on the fast track to the loony bin, moit.

Anyhow I don't set the policy, nor defend its practicality. I'm just passing on the info I was given with regard also to Sichuan jobs and a possible reason why that job is requiring actual docs rather than just scanned copies.

*kisses*

So I gently pushed back on the health exam and below is the response I got. I think the message may have gone over their heads so to speak but I don't want to jeopardize this offer. Any suggestions on crafting a response? I also provided an excerpt from my original email which laid out the entire process for them:

Quote:
Based on review and approval of the college management, I am very happy to officially inform that you are accepted to be our foreign teacher for next academic year. All the documents you sent are fine, except one. That is, according to provincial authorities, we need the original copy of your Health Examination. Please mail it via EMS to the following address:

Original:
Quote:
I am happy to mail you any documents you require, but I have been advised by my local embassy that I have to present the original medical check to them once I have received my invitation letter and work permit/visa notification. Here is how they described the process to me:

- Michael sends digital copies of documents to .
- . provides documents to the officials for processing
- Officials provide . the necessary Visa documents
- . sends Visa documents to Michael
- Michael takes Visa documents, passport, original stamped medical check, etc to local embassy for the passport stamp
- Upon arrival in China, Michael officially signs contract and registers with PSB.
- . takes Michael to have medical examination completed by local doctors
- . assists Michael with obtaining the Foreign Expert Certificate and Residence Permit

Does this sound about right? I will be happy to do whatever I can to make the process quicker and easier.

I thought that was a pretty good attempt to be politely naive. Did I give them too much info? Should I really just state bluntly, 'The embassy informed me not to mail the original as they will need it. I will not be able to accept the offer if this is a requirement'?? Seems like a big gamble at this stage in the game and the current teacher was duped by the same request, so I won't have his assistance with this. I suppose I will wait until Monday as another school in Sichuan is going to get back to me.

Is a July 15 2014 end date going to give me any problems next year, assuming I want to keep doing it and potentially check out a new province?

Do you mean end date of the contract? No problems that I can see. A typical uni contract will end anywhere from June 30 to July 31st. Your Residence Permit may not match the contract date and that is the one to pay attention to. Your possible new school will need to have a little time at the end of your contract to get going on getting you a new Residence Permit. When you are finished teaching or nearly so, ask your current school for a Release Letter, which tells the government that your contract with that school has expired and you are free to contract with another.

The date of the contract isn't the controlling issue, so if you are finished with your duties to the first school on say, June 20, and they have signed a Release Letter stating you have fulfilled the contract, then the new school can begin the process of getting you a new FEC and then a new Residence Permit. They have to apply for the new Residence Permit, and hand in your passport to the PSB, before the old Residence Permit expires.

Thanks....I may have shot myself in the foot with this school by pushing back too hard on requests for original docs. I tried to be polite but I was kind of grumpy this morning after seeing a bunch of conflicting emails.

They went from asking me just for the original health exam, to asking me for original degree and other items. Sigh.

I'm dealing with a high school I like now. They haven't mentioned any hurry, since we are looking at a September start. But from what I am gathering here, I really should pick the best thing I have within the next 1-2 days and move things along? I haven't even done a medical yet...
