|
|
Hi,
I have a summer school starting in the UK this July for 4 to 5 weeks.
I have been living abroad in Europe for the past academic year.
I was wondering about tax issues. Would I be put on a cumulative tax code?
Or, as I am currently claiming JSA (I've been in the UK for 4 weeks now), would I be put on a different tax code? Would the Job Centre give me a different tax code?
I am 99% sure I will be leaving the UK this September again for another academic year, so would I have to wait until the next tax year to reclaim any money?
Also, does anyone know anything about student loans repayments?
A big thank you in advance! |

When last I was required to pay tax in the UK it was deducted directly from salary by employers.
As you have recently returned from Europe, my guess is that you will be given an "emergency tax code" and your employers will be required to deduct up to 33% of your salary.
Maybe you could contact the tax authorities and have a current tax code assessed.
On the 'University' thread a quotation states that student loans do not have to start being repaid until you have a salary of £21,000 per annum. |

amisexy,
If you have been claiming JSA, when you sign off, you will be given a P46 which you should give to your new employer. This helps giving you a tax code.
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/incometax/tax-codes.htm
The emergency code for the tax year 2013-14 is 944L. You may be given this code. That means your personal allowance in this tax year is 9,440 pounds before you pay any tax.
If you are charged tax, you can reclaim it by completing the on-line form at http://www.inland-revenue.org.uk
Usually the tax department is efficient and repays you within 6 weeks if it is straightforward.
As for student loan repayments, check outhttp://www.studentloanrepayment.co.uk |

Tax will probably be deducted at source under PAYE scheme. Provided your UK income in the tax year is less than £9,440, you can claim it back. |

depending on how much you earn per week, you may also have Class 1 national insurance contributions deducted too. |
