The OP has not posted anything since June 6th. Maybe she has just given up, totally discouraged.

3 years ago, before I first came to the UAE I was beginning to think there was some sort of unspoken agreement among many of the posters on Dave's to discourage the hordes of unqualified/unprofessional EFL teacher/surfers in Asia from coming to this part of the world and further undermining local pay rates. (Hairier teachers might correct me if I'm wrong - but in the context of the last 20 years it seems the pay rates have steadily dropped over that period).

Therefore, I am acutely aware that my position is precarious. I.e. I'm not sure I could change schools if I didn't like the one I'm at now. So having said BA and CELTA were good enough for me, I should point out that I am now busy with getting the DELTA and I've enrolled for a distance MA starting in September.

It seems rules in the UAE are bendy, I know this because I've been operating at the bendy end for 3 years.

Note that if you pull back on something bendy you better not let go, or it could spring back and slap you in the face.

Hairier? Laughing

If there is a conspiracy, nobody invited me. But, I think that most of us who warn teachers with low qualifications away is just because of the situation that you describe yourself to be in...

The Gulf is not a cheap place to live and I personally wouldn't want to change countries in my 50's to be in such a risky financial situation. That said... all is relative... and for many it may still be a step up?

I think we regular posters merely want teachers to have realistic expectations, what with all the rumors about the "BIG BUCKS" that one can earn in the Gulf.

Actually, I've never gotten this impression from you VS, you seem ok with noting other points of view and it is obvious that you try to paint a balanced/realistic of the situation in the Gulf.

I've posted here to provide another description of an experience - I'm careful not to make recommendations or imply that my situation is typical. But I'm equally sure that I'm not the only one in this boat.

And the final part of my post includes a clear warning for any and all! Smile
