The housing for the Hangzhou college is a hotel on the campus where foreign teachers apparently have the top floor. You get two hotel rooms connected to make a larger apartment. Does anyone have any experience with this? It doesnt come with a stove, but a teacher I emailed there says he bought one for his apt. Does anyone have any experience buying a stove/oven?

I think living in a hotel room for a year would get depressing for most people, no matter how they try and dress it up.
The university apartments usually have everything you need to move straight into, you might need to buy a few little things and give it a good clean but an apartment definitely beats a hotel style room. They're designed for living in and not just spending a weekend in.
If it's a hotel there's probably regulations about cooking in the room and less privacy than an apartment, is it easy to bring friends back, nosy reception staff checking your every move, how do you do your laundry, share a washer with the other FTs?

No. I've been talking to a teacher there. He says the room has a washer, and you have privacy, the only bother comes from the cleaning staff once a week. You can cook, you just have to buy your own stove.

Electric hotplates are really common here, relatively cheap and easy to buy. A proper gas hob is a different matter, as you will also need a gas source.

To give you an idea:

electric: http://detail.tmall.com/item.htm?id=18945796694
gas: http://detail.tmall.com/item.htm?spm=a230r.1.14.65.dYwdCX&id=12463462732

As mentioned, you can also get little electric ovens for baking. Most Chinese homes either have a proper built in range with two or more gas hobs or a single or double gas hob like the one I linked.

You can get a full stove/oven combination like you would have back home, but they are expensive and need fitting, so probably not something you would do for an apartment provided by the school.
