Yeah, they technically can't search you without your permission. I'll throw in my story.
Once while leaving Philly after a concert, to head back to a friend's house we were stopped while having a case a beer in the car, all being underage. One of my "smart" friends had the foresight to cover the beer with some sweatshirts that were in the back. The police got us out of the car, shone their flashlights all over looking for anything to charge us on, being the youthful hippies that we were. They wanted to search the car and specifically asked about the suspicious-looking clothes pile in the back seat. Eventually they had to let us go without searching the car. I suppose they could have made something up, but the one cop was pretty nice, unlike his over-eager buddy who seemed to be looking for trouble.
I guess the point is that if you are nice to them, they might go easy on you. I still don't trust them and know that they often do search illegally. Especially if you look a certain way. |

All normal.
Not illegal for them to ask who you are and what your business is, just smile and ask "Am I being detained?", then continue on your way. |

and it all helps police catch more bad guys and prevent more crime. if 1 in 20 convicted felons in a given county's jail system is green, as a police officer you'd probably be utilizing your time more wisely spending less time looking for green people.
cry "profiling" all you want, but when you take a good look at the population of the jails and prisons in the US, you start to notice a trend.
a grocery store gets robbed at gunpoint but dispatch is unable to give you a description of the perp. you encounter 2 people running out of the store as you pull up in your patrol car. one is wearing a well tailored suit with a good haircut, the other is covered in tattoos, is wearing a t-shirt 3 sizes too big, his jeans sag half way down his legs and he has a gold chain that is long enough to be used as horse reins.
i already know who you're puttin' your money on.
it's simply the world we live in. |

But at that distance how can you tell if it is, indeed a well-tailored suit, perhaps just a run-of-the-mill suit you would buy at Sears. And then what? |

Because everyone knows that convenience store robbers put on their Sears suit before strolling down to the local Circle K to rob it...........[FACEPALM]
You seriously think that is a toss-up choice on who probably robbed the place? Seriously? |

You talkin' to me? I was just mimicking how there is always some discrepancy in police reports because the officer "couldn't tell" if it was a real gun or water pistol. Or if the perpetrator had a knife or a cell phone or whatever nonsense the police always make up to justify whatever shoddy work they do |

Undoubtedly there are less than perfect, corrupt, even stupid, policemen out there. However, dynow's point was regarding profiling and the general prohibition on its use by our police forces to the point of absurdity.
It's clear from dashcams and taped radio and phone calls that they can and do attempt to change their stories to avoid civil rights violations and appear innocent. |

Actually that's a pretty lame way of looking at it and an oversimplification of the real issue.
Good read right here

I'm always amazed how little people actually know about the nature of things in their own countries yet claim to understand how other places operate. |

no thanks. i've got a pretty darn good idea of how things are in my country.
there is no "issue" here. there is who is most frequently committing crimes and who rarely commits crimes and YES, they tend to dress the same and talk the same as well. when you're looking at stats of 10:1, 15:1, sometimes as high as 50:1 or 100:1, call me crazy but I'd tend to look in one direction more than the other. that's good time management and prioritizing resources. |
