Hey, you never know! I've seen job ads that need teachers to do office work outside of class. And there's always a case of how fast you can whip up a lesson plan on Word.
http://www.typingtest.com
My results:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Test Name: Strategic Alliance with Computers
Gross Speed: 95 wpm
Errors: 1 word(s)
Net Speed: 94 wpm
Accuracy: 98%
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

Impressive!
Back in my pre-EFL days (the Dark Ages), I did a bunch of temp jobs during school breaks, and I cannot count the number of typing tests I had to take. I think I was clocked at around 60wpm, which I thought was OK until I saw Steve's results...

43 wpm, 100% accuracy.
Steve, you wouldn't mind helping me type up my papers for me would you? |

Really fast, I did that in only a couple of seconds. Next problem is accuracy. Maybe I should try using my elbows again. |

Can you give us another fun little game to play? Please oh please oh please?!?!?!? I loved the typing-with-the-elbows challenge!

I once did 84 with 6 mistakes. However, that was just copying something. Thinking and typing, I go about three words per minute with four errors.
I had a boss who could do an unbelieveable 120 words per minute. I thought he was kidding when he first told me that. His fingers hardly seemed to be moving, but the words were flying. He was one of the sharpest individuals I've ever known too, an active-minded national sales manager pulling down 150 grand about 15 years ago. He said he bacame so proficient while writing advertising copy under deadlines. |

I did better than I thought I would. 39 wpm with four errors. That's much better than when I was learning to type, which was also the last time I tried to type without looking at the keys. That was about 15 years ago. I'm pretty impressed by you folks typing beyond 60 wpm. |

55WPM... I just basically pick with my index fingers and jam the spacebar with my thumb. If my ring fingers are lucky they get used a few times.
Thanks for this by the way, a few applications I have been filling out for part times jobs here in the States (while I try to get my job set up in S. Korea) ask for WPM. |

Thanks, but I wasn't expecting to see this. Back in the dark days of temp work, I did around 60-70.
I suppose that it's whipping up lesson plans and teaching materials at the last second that has gotten the speed up. I can recall typing up entire pages of dialogue during a 5-minute break, thanks to boring materials in the text that need adapting. But it's too much pressure to do it then.
On a general note, without a computer, TEFLing would be impossible.

Denise,
Haven't got any at the moment, see what I can do. Shame that Teacher Lindsay was such a spoilsport, under 15's indeed. Then lo and behold he goes and does what he did on the China Off-Topic forum, see the discussions about it now.
Anyway, what he did any self-respecting 14 year old would cringe at. Silly boy! |

I got 68WPM with 97% accuracy. This is about the same speed I've had since learning to touch type on an old manual about 20 ( ) years ago.
I get in trouble for typing too loud here, as I have this really old clunker of a keyboard that makes tons more noise than the old ones. Which is why I hand write my lesson plans, and only use this old paperweight of a computer for handouts, oh, and Dave's of course... |

75 wpm, with two screwed up words.
Thought I would do much better, but this keyboard's spacebar is buggered up. |

couldn't access the test from my Unix machine. But I've often thought back with nostalgia about my high school typing class. I've made more money from that one skill (and oh how much I complained about being required to take a business class) than any other single thing I learned in school. And I love the stares I get in internet cafes when I'm punching away.
Hey, any of you learn to type in your 2nd language? Does it mess up your English typing? Oh, typing in russian is a torturous experience for me. It'd be cool to type in Russian. (Guess I should learn the language first.) |

This is sad but I still can't figure out how to put the ~ and ' on top of letters when I type in Spanish. The keyboards in Guatemala had separate keys so I didn't have to deal with that issue. These American keyboards you need to practically do an old Nintendo secret code in order to get the accents on top of the letters! Anyone remember the codes up,up, down, down, left, right, select, start. Oh and this typing test I did horribly on it so embarrassing because all I do is pretty much type all day. |
