Generally speaking does Japan conduct criminal background checks. I have a DUI and was wondering if that would affect my chances of getting a job in Japan. Thank you and feel free to PM. (I have deleted a sentence from my original post as I was altering this question several times to fit other threads for other countries. Sorry for the confusion.)

My feeling is that a DUI is more an issue of driving. If you have a license, and you are from a left side driving country you can get a license easily. If you are from a right side driving country, you can do a short test (which is really quite long and difficult here). In your case, if you want to drive, you will have to do the Japanese length test because of your DUI. This will means 3-4 months of expensive lessons, and a very difficult driver center course test, a 100 question written test, and a difficult road test. You will need to remember 3-4 routes for the driver center course test, and 3-4 courses for the road test. They will tell you which course (they will choose 1) on the day of each test that you will drive.

So my point is, DUI's while criminal I am guessing will likely be more of a problem with you getting a driving license here and not necessarily a bar to your employment chances. Just my guess though from having gone through driving training recently...

No, it doesn't.

I think it depends on the country. Americans have a long process which includes the driver's test, but Canadians don't, to my knowledge.

Are you sure about this? It's been about 10 years since I got my Japanese license, but from what I understand, the side of road that people drive on in one's home country doesn't matter. For example, I think Germans don't need to do the test, and they drive on the right side. I think the issue for people from the US is that there is no national system for drivers licences or training. That is, they don't know what kind of training someone has received, since it's so different in different parts of the US, so they make Americans do the tests.

Why? From what I recall, a criminal background check isn't required to work in Japan, or to get a drivers license in Japan. How will they know about the DUI?

This must vary by location in Japan. For me, I took a single 1-hour lesson (not 3-4 months, like you say), which was optional. I then took the written test (in English), and the driving test. The driving test was on a closed course at the drivers license center, and there was only 1 route. The driving school across the street (where I took my 1 lesson) had an exact replica of the course, so I could try it a few times there with an instructor to give me pointers. That said, when I took the real driving test, they were very strict. I failed the first time because the back wheel grazed a curb when I was going through a really tight s-curve. I went back a week later and passed the test on the 2nd try, though.

It's a matter of whether the country in which you obtained your drivers license has an agreement with Japan -

Quote:
Residents holding a valid license from one of the following 21 countries are exempt from taking any exams associated with getting the license and need to only produce the relevant documentation and pay the fees. France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxemburg, United Kingdom, Denmark, Ireland, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Finkland, Australia, New Zealand, Austria, and Canada.

Residents from most countries (including the USA, South Korea, Mexico, Taiwan, China, Brazil, Peru) must take three exams when applying to get a Japanese drivers license: an eye test, written test (10 questions T/F), and driving test.
