I've read that one of the joys of living in the contractor compound near the Ras Tanura Aramco complex means suffering the noxious odor of petrol fumes and generally experiencing very poor air quality. Can anyone provide advice as to just how bad it these days, or has this been overblown (pun intended)? Much obliged. Rolling Eyes

No, it's not that good!! It's MUCH MUCH worse!! Furthermore, there are all the obnoxious qualities of the trainees and those of the administration!!! (Personally, I prefer the air quality!!)

Hi

I wonder if you could give more info about the contractor compound at RS. I'm due to fly out there in a couple of weeks to start teaching at Aramco (I've been hired through Al Falak).

Is the compound there for all non direct-hire teachers or just for those with certain contractors? What are the facilities like? Any info from anybody living there would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Smile

did you search this forum for "ras tanura"? That will pull up some recent threads on this.

I think the term "contractor compound" might be a misnomer. It's more likely that it's simply a compound and Al Falak, and probably other companies, use to house their employees. Because of that, info I've posted on threads your search will pull up may not be specifically about the compound you'll be housed on. But there can't be many compounds in RT as it is so small and if it's not the same one, it's likely to be pretty similar.

On another forum for migrant workers, much discussion about the feasibility of living in Bahrain and commuting to Ras Tanura.

I say bite the bullet and stay in RT

that forum is at

http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=803716

and it's actually a thread about commuting from Khobar although it does mention RT.

I'd say that if you intend to bring family over, RT is a dead end and life would be very difficult for them there. The main reason men commute from Bahrain to anywhere in Saudi is because they want their families to have a better lifestyle and that makes total sense to me. It would make less sense to those who don't have family, obviously.

If you're single, you can eke out a life in RT.

The thread on that other forum discussed the viability of commuting from Bahrain to Khobar and also to RT as well as Jubail. My guess is that not many on a teacher's income are going to set up home in Manama and commute to KSA.

Have you ever visited Manama, Bahrain. It is expensive there. Rent is higher, food costs more, taxis are more expensive. Not an option to commute back and forth. What if there is a traffic back up at the border? Driving everyday with Arabs is like playing Russian Roulette. That's whack!!!!

You must be kidding! I'm guessing you don't currently live in Khobar. Rent is WAAAAAAY more expensive in Khobar and food costs are comparable. Taxis are definitely more expensive but that's not much of an issue if you're a commuter anyway as you have your own transport.

It's been over a year since we've had a teacher late for class who commutes from Bahrain. And we have many teachers who do that.

I'd rather spend 40 minutes every weekday driving in Saudi than my entire week. It's a different driving world in Bahrain. Much, much safer driving.

Not many teachers on the salary Scot was earning in KSA would commute no. But there are plenty of us who are earning more than enough to do it and put enough by for their bijou early-Victorian town house on the Clyde. This is a forum is about providing information for people to make their own choices, not making their choices for them.

I know of many teachers who commute daily from Bahrain. It catches up with you in the long run.

Sicklyman never misses an opportunity to tell us how he is earning a zillion riyals a month. Methinks he doth protest too much.,

If he feels as he does about the commute from Bahrain , why does he still live in KSA ?
