Hello,

I have found a position I like, but the school is opened only from September 1st. My resident visa - in a different city - expires in the middle of August. Is it possible for me to get an extention, or a tourist visa to 'bridge the gap' until September? Or must I leave the country to get a new visa? (I'd rather not.)

Thanks!

(Edited for spelling (Rolls eyes))

I know that you can in Guangzhou. Find a travel service in your city. I think they can help you.

If you stay LEGALLY in a place, i.e. if you are registered with the PSB (which automatically is the case if you stay at a hotel), then you can get an extension of up to 2 months (but only single entry).
If you don't know whether your school has registered you with the PSB, you may choose to travel to some place and stay for a couple of days, then visit the local PSB. Then, however, youmust insist on getting an extension for "tourist".

roger..

all my docs expires on the 10th of July.. I would like to travel in China.. if I have all my docs, does that mean I'm registered?? Can I go to the local PSB and have it extended?? my school doesn't want to extend it for me. I really would like to stay and meet with my aunt in August.

Last time I got a visa extension was in Jinghong, Yunnan province. I was staying there at a family-run guesthouse which didn't have those official registration slips that hotels in China with their "Approved" plaques usually have.
At the PSB, they asked me where I was staying, and hearing the name of my guesthouse they complied with my request of getting an extension.

But I repeat: you must stay at a place approved of by the PSB to house foreign nationals - either your accommodation, or an official hotel. You will only need your passport and your resident's permit if you ask the PSB in the place where you are currently working. In other places, you will only need your passport.
An extension is like a new visa; it will cover a whole page. The fee is modest (I paid RMB 60 for two months, if I remember correctly).

ok.. so I just have to go to the PSB.. bring my passport and residence permit and pay a fee.

As for the address, I will be staying with my friend who has a guest room to spare. Is that allowed??? Do I need proof from my friend??? BTW, they're foreigners as well. The husband is working for an Indian company who's based here while the wife stays at home.

Do I need to bring a translator?? How long does it take to process it??

Clomper, Are you already at your friend's? If not you should probably go to the PSB where you are currently located and get your visa extended. Then go visit your friend.

I don't think staying with a family - whether international or foreign - entitles you to this kind of PSB service. How come yoThey cannot verify where you stay unless you report to them for approval first thing.
No, being a guest in someone else's home is out.
You must be LEGALLY registered - via a registration slip!
