I'm married with a 9 year old.

I will be in Qatar for two days shortly after the end of Ramadan. Is there anything a new hire could do to set himself and family up such as car/housing/preparation/whatevas? Family and I would not be arriving til the fourth week in August.

Thank you
mts

I hear that CNA-Q is the UoH of Qatar! Any truth to that rumour?

First of all, there is no guarantee you will arrive when CNA HR says you will. Your visa and your supporting documentation has yet to be processed.

As for cars, you can drive a rental for up to 10 days (I stand to be corrected on the number of days) on your Canadian license, after that you need a valid residency permit to convert to a Qatari license. This will take minimum 2 - 3 weeks after your arrival and longer for your spouse as you are her sponsor.

As for housing, you may be shown what you will be given (no choice involved) and you will have 3 days to buy linens and kitchen items. The accomodation will be furnished and the taste is questionable, the lack of quality is not.

The college will arrange for you to visit the larger malls (Carrefour etc.)for incidental shopping, not necessarily giving you a choice to your taste. There are other options but not convenient for the college so you will have to search those out on your own.

It is doubtful you would be given access to your final accomodation ahead of any other new employee.
