Some people are blinded into what they want to hear, on the other hand, EdEx is a way in for people without the relevant qualifications. He seems to be under the notion that because he is a Muslim - he will be immune from culture shock and has a better idea of how life is there - he is in for a rude shock. |

| Indeed - I noticed that non-Muslims often adapted better to life in the KofSA than observant Muslims from other cultures. |

That, I take it, is your opinion - although if you have the research to back it up, I'd appreciate a link to it.
I use "conventional letter-writing format" as I see no reason to dispense with politeness or good manners just because I'm posting on a forum.
I can see how that might escape the attention of someone who, on a thread, insults other posters ("e.g. "entitled creeps").
A straw-man argument "about who is a troll" would mean that there is, in fact, no troll. So, are you retracting your insult?

You may think this is good manners, but it is not good netiquette.
You've already got an introduction with your profile name to the left, and a supplied response in a serial fashion down the page. This is CMC language usage, and as such you ought to use the 'correct language for the situation'. Every time I read one of your postings it gets my heckles up, it appears you're having a pop at people. You're in the small minority and it is not coming off as politeness, but more impoliteness. |

You must be VERY new here if you think JohnSlat is one of the "impolite" posters. I wonder at your values and upbringing if his posts "get (your) hackles up."
CMC language... whatever its perceived rules are... will never trump what has been good manners for millions of us since English writing appeared. While I don't use normal letter format on boards or emails, many in my generation do. If it bothers you, I would think that is your problem, not JohnSlat's. The cure for you would be to not read his posts so you don't become upset.

| Personally, I think the forum would be more of an informative and productive place if some of the old-timers backed off a tad. Not every question or comment requires a condescending response. I know that over the years there have been many complaints about their behavior. It certainly makes one wonder about their values and upbringing. |

Or, you could say to throw away your existing rulebooks, observe what others speech is like, then replicate it, because to do otherwise is to make yourself the odd one out. We don't exist in the past, our language is a living, breathing thing. Unfortunately we do have to teach a prescribed version in many of our work situations though! |

Thank you Beaker, you are right, IMO. Time for an update fellas. And the old skin hanging around subtly mocking Saudi and the looking down on job seekers is tiresome.
Scot47, Sincerely speaking, too much information at this time could be sensitive. Lets just say that I've done my time in the kingdom and not too bitter about it. I can also point out that for the right people, Saudi has boundless opportunities, but not for many I've met who repeatedly try to draw lines of superiority with Arab people. They never uttered a true syllable of Arabic their entire stay and wonder why it's all so unfair. I think it is xenophobia encrusted with prolonged cohabitation. To be fair, it's seen in many places where TEFL is big. There are major culture gaps between the anglophones and their target markets, but I've had a great deal of success crossing it whenever I can.
To newcomers I offer this advice mainly for men (because that is my experience), try to forget the system of signs and values you're bringing with you and learn to reflect the good hearted intentions that most Saudis will show to you. Have a gas with them too, they are incredibly funny people, great sense of irony. Greet them with an open hearted Salam and touch your heart when you shake, and you will shake hands often - even when you go to a bank.
I hope to meet more ladies who dive right in and get involved with a female community or group of friends. It would be good to know more, even vicariously. Lets all try to keep it up beat and give a little more benefit of the doubt, because in many cases its not as it seems.

I was wondering the same thing. I think the teachers are coming back within the next week. It would be interesting to see if lots of the them got ripped off. And if there are still 90 day visas, despite the BS of the last summer. |

| Most institutions will expect their teachers back in mid-August. In State Unis no teaching will take place for a week or two. I do not know about the places serviced by Cowboy and Indian Outfits. |

If you are a Muslim you will be in for a surprise. This country is as far away from what Islam professes as possible. I've known Muslims who were disgusted after living here in the land of The Two Holy Mosques.
