I got the impression from the OP that going for more quals is becoming more and more necessary in order for someone to just remain in teaching let alone move up the ladder, that doesn't sit well with me, why do I need an MA or a PHD to still do the same tasks?

If you're content in your present location and in your current teaching situation and feel you've reached your potential (how ever you define it), then the OP's scenario doesn't apply to you nor possibly interest you. Simple as that. In other words, if you feel it ain't broke, what's there to fix? And that's why it "doesn't sit well" with you.

OP here. Very Happy

It is something I have found personally, the older I get, the more qualifications I need just to remain competitive for the better jobs. Also, my friends who are of similar age to me are finding they need the extra relevant qualifications to be competitive for the better jobs. So it isn't just me.

I think I put in the OP that this scenario might not be across the board, if you have no need to get the extra quals and are happy where you are then good for you. By the way, I didn't start out in TEFL until my mid 30's.
