|
|
It is not only schoolchildren who bestow nicknames on teachers. isolated and unpopular teachers are often given a nickname by colleagues who dislike them. The one I remember was named "BALDRICK" and it stuck. Any others ?
("Baldrick" was a character in the TV series "Blackadder" - an incredibly stupid man.) |

In China, my nickname - among teachers in the teachers' office - was 'Studley'.
Seems some of the middle-aged, female Chinese English teachers had a crush on me.
Sure beats the hell out of 'That idiot'. |

I've had a few. In Oaxaca I was known as Señor No Me Toca (Mister Don't Touch Me - Mexicans are very touchy-feely and as an American, I don't like being touched). In one school in Jakarta I was the Grammar Geek, but my all-time favorite was bestowed by a student. I was Mr. ABM, which stood for A**hole Bule M*****f***er, hahaha! "Bule" in Indonesian is a somewhat rude word for white people and I was well known for distancing myself from my bule brethren. We have a terrible reputation in SE Asia and I really didn't want it to touch me. I guess I was sufficiently adamant about it to earn that nickname. She gave it to me in friendly jest, and it stuck with me amongst my favorite students the rest of my time in Indonesia. |

'Backpack boy'. I used to carry my things (teaching books, lesson plans etc) in a backpack to class with me and I was mistaken for a student a lot of times. |

One girl, about 21 years old, said I looked like her father, so she started calling me 'Daddy'. It was hilarious - and she thought the joke was on me! |

A newly-qualified, baby-faced friend of mine started his first day at a comprehensive in England and the kids there thought he was a new student so they beat him up!
The students where I now work nicknamed an American teacher Skunky due to the smell that trails after him. Quite witty, I thought. |
