I have an offer for an international school in the Jiading neighborhood of Shanghai.
This will be my first time in China.
Does anyone recommend the area? Any info is appreciated.
Thanks |

Jiading is really a satellite city of Shanghai and was added into the metropolitan area recently, in other words it's over an hour away. Internet says there is no metro line but one can catch the bus.
just be advised shanghai is expensive and anything under 30000 is not such a great lifestyle |

Thanks YAMARI.
The job pays 12,000 RMB and also provides an apartment. It seems like a good deal compared to the other offers that were coming my way (mostly in the 8,000-9,000 range, in places that are an hour or so outside of Suzhou or Nanjing).
I have a simple lifestyle, and hope to save a huge chunk of this salary each month. Seoul has the rep for being expensive, but yet you can still eat pretty cheaply if you know where to go, and aren't eating western food all the time. I'm wondering if Shanghai is similar in this regard. |

With an apartment that is a great starting salary assuming your not working 24/7. There is no reason you could not save quite a bit of your salary. |

Thanks Gemini. It seems like a decent starting salary, though I'm wondering if the higher costs in Shanghai will even things out. My only real expenses are the occasional beer somewhere, coffee shop, and traveling around by bus/train on weekends to see nearby places such as Suzhou etc
Is it unrealistic to think I can save US $1400-1500/month? (12,000 RMB looks like it's about US $1,950 right now). |

For most people...very unrealistic. |

Yes, unrealistic. Is that 12,000 net? Unless the contract says so directly, don't expect it to be so. I'd say $1000 or maybe a bit more with a modest lifestyle and no major surprises. It'll be harder to save with Shanghai in your backyard as well. Some of my savings I attribute to lack of attractive options to spend. |

I think your savings goal is way too high. For a more realistic plan, you need to assume 50 RMB per day pocket money and 50 RMB per day in groceries. You'll also need to replace some clothes while you're here, so calculate those at the same price you'd pay in your home country.
You can easily save 3,000 RMB and maybe even 6,000 RMB per month, but anything more is pushing it. |
