My own view is that this falls far, far short of discrimination based on race. Victim? How sensationalist.
Nothing but a linguistic barrier in a teapot.

HA!!! Telling someone who's black, one of the richest women in the world, that a handbag (a $35,000 handbag - which is really kind of obscene, anyway) that the item is "too expensive."
Is that racist? Gee, I don't know. Is stereotyping racist?

Dear Johnslat
That shop assistant would probably have said the same thing to you or me - both white men. How was she to know how rich or otherwise Oprah is? She is not at all famous there.
Incidentally, have you ever been to Zurich? I have. Just a few times. But enough for me to form my own discriminatory view of the service offered there - expect nothing but snootiness and attitude from staff in cafes, boutiques etc. Especially if you cannot speak German. Like Oprah.
Race is a red herring here. That is about the only colour issue involved.
Best wishes

Dear Rogerslat
Love that show. But, and I speak with the backing of having taught many, many FCE and CAE classes chock-full of lasses from Zurich, your wealth would be no barrier to downright offensiveness.
And people say Muscovites are rude...
Best wishes

Dear Sasha,
Actually, John's my younger, ugly brother. (Hi, I'm John, and this is my brother, John.)
Seriously, we were both born in Boston - but I was first: 19 1/2 years before him.
"Slattery was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to Joan Mulhern, a retired CPA, and John "Jack" Slattery, a leather merchant. He is one of six children. Slattery is of Irish descent and was raised Roman Catholic.
I think I can see a family resemblance:

Dear Johnslat
You mean you are not one and the same?! That is confusing me. I don't understand. I'll never be able to watch Mad Men again.
Hang on, I'll claim discrimination of some type now...

Dear Sasha,
OK, it's really me - I'm a Mad Man. But that was when I was younger.
