Does anyone know what the costs are for car insurance when driving into Mexico?
The consulate's website says that Canadian car insurance is not valid in Mexico and national car insurance must be purchased at the border, but it doesn't say how many pesos/dollars it costs. |

It depends on what you get. I suggest getting to the border, and on the US side take a look at some regular insurance agencies. If you are staying for more than a few days, a one year liability only policy(keep you out of jail) costs not much more than 2 weeks or so at those daily insurance places. You just gotta get on the ground and check them out. I am trying to remember how much I paid for my 1 year policy.
I advise you NOT to purchase the daily policies unless you are there for only a few days. |

Contact Sanborn's (yes, the restuarants, but they also do car insurance for foreigners in Mexico) http://www.sanbornsinsurance.com/ I believe you can get an online quote. |

You can buy Mexican car insurance at the AAA offices in the US. It cost me about 400 bucks for a year's coverage 11 years ago. |

Kind of expensive, Moonie. I paid under $150 for a year's coverage back in 1998, but then again, I shopped around and got it at an indepenent insurance agent in Douglas, Arizona. |

What are you, a stalker?
Insurance costs are directly related to the kind of car you have and the coverage you choose. I thought everyone knew that.... |

And at least for policies in the US (I've no idea about policies in Mexico) your AGE, SEX and DRIVING RECORD. |

I have been given a quote of 165.00 USD for liability insurance for one year. Nobody even asked what kind of car I would be bringing down. Thanks for all the info. folks. |

No, but you are Moonraven, didn't I post on the subject before you did? I posted about a basic liablility policy. DUH! A Mexican Insurance policy, at least the ones bought at the border doesn't adjust prices for kind of car. It is a liability policy, not a comphrehensive. And I stated Basic, which is minimal coverage, as I put it, enough to keep you out of jail.
So please, again I might add, read a post before disagreeing with and calling someone a stalker.

I calls them they way I sees them, Gringo--and "I don't need no stinkin' badge" to do so, either.
In your Douglas, AZ, post you made no mention whatsoever of straight liability insurance. Although in the case of this thread, apparently the person who asked the question has decided to go with straight liability, there are other folks who might have wanted comprehensive--since cars do get broken into in Mexico and comprehensive insurance will pay to replace windows and doors and locks, fix an engine if a fuel hose breaks when you're driving in the desert and a fire ignites on the manifold, things like that.
The main reason to put Douglas, AZ, on the map is for the fabulous pies they serve there! |

Yeah, but most people are capable of looking at all of the replies before they offer there own advice. But maybe to refresh your memory, Moonie, you can take a look at this direct quote of my post on this thread. You should have read my advice, but you didn't and suggested AAA. I said AAA might be more expensive.
I sure hope you listen to your students better than you listen to the other posters on this forum.
