Greetings,

I am interested in knowing if any of the ESL/EFL people teaching in the Gulf region are engaged in teaching writing skills. Aside from the basics, are there any course-work devoted to teaching the basic skills of writing (e.g. a term paper) for those students who are interested in academics and further study?

What are your experiences?

Kenneth

Hi eslandteacher,

There are now a number of private colleges who are based on the US university curriculum and have the same core courses -calling them Comp or Comm I and II. The first being an essay course and second being the research paper.

I've done the first course in Egypt and Oman. It's a hard slog. I use the process approach, and with writing normally their weakest skill, that means many drafts. Of course one advantage is that one is never at a loss for something to do to pass an evening! Shocked

I also taught writing at various levels in other colleges through the years. Since all students in the Gulf have the goal of studying in English, either within their own systems or traveling abroad, writing is normally separated out and taught intensively.

Try EVERGREEN.

I find it very useful.
