Istanbul is teeming with shady and dangerous characters, but if you avoid those EFL characters, you will be OK !
Seriously, keep your wits about you in "The City of the World's Desire" ! |

| The violence has spread to Ankara also, Grendal. Sounds like you'll have a good time, though. Stay out of the bars, and maybe off the streets. |

I will don't worry. I have a serious allergy to tear gas.
We've rented an SUV with my Riyad Bank credit card and are touring the country outside of Ankara now. I've also given in to the god of money and signed my next years' contract with my slave drivers. I should be back in Riyadh by the end of July.
We watch the news on TV and we've bought matching Ataturk t-shirts to wear so that we blend in. We don't venture into the centre of the city after dark. It's not as bad as it appears. I've been downtown during the day and the municipal workers are all busy cleaning up the mess. The shock police are all hanging out downtown reading books and drinking tea near their armoured cars and water cannons. I even asked them for directions to the nearest cell phone outlet. They seemed at ease and were very polite in giving directions.
Reporting from Turkiye.

| EdEx has no intention of honoring the end of contract bonus if you are not on an iqama. By law, it only applies if you have an iqama--so they plan to cheat everyone who is working on the 90 visa out of it. They are also experiencing trouble getting the visas extended to August. If you are EdEx and on the 90 day visa, you may be leaving much earlier than they led you to believe! |
Now that Ramadan is here, how many Edex staff are still stuck in KSA waiting for their holiday pay? How many gave up and took off? |

There's something really suspicious about EdEx. Out of the blue, I received a request for my resume, passport and degrees "before we can begin the assessment process".
I had no memory of applying to Education Experts Company, but I assumed from the line "before we can begin the assessment process" that I must have and that it was therefore a job I would be interested in.
I sent the requested documents, and only one day later I was offered a job and sent a contract to sign and return. An instantaneous job offer is always suspicious, and even stranger is that on my resume it is quite clear that I am already working in KSA. How could I possibly sign a new contract while under contract to another company? Surely EdEx knows that it would be impossible even if I wanted their low-paying position, which I don't. |
I received a similar email last week despite never having any previous contact with EdEx. The sender used a Gmail web account and the signature name was also different to the one used on the email account. I assumed it was a scam and deleted the message. |

Back to school again. Here it is Ramadan. Imposed religious beliefs upon guests in a country is hard to swallow after returning from Turkiye. There, in Turkiye, I was able to smoke and do other alcoholic practices as I pleased, when I pleased. Here at school I have to hide in my office and feel guilty when I drink water because every other teacher in the room is fasting. They say its ok for them and it doesn't bother them, but I think they are just being polite and kind. As for new faces, ICEAT have brought in some fresh meat for the grinder here. Now, unfortunately, I am like hawkeye in the series MASH. I weigh the recruits up and judge and sometimes bet how long they will last here. Oh the depths of my insensitivity, how low will I go? Looking on the bright side, literally, it's hot outside. Our air conditioners were running for 40 days while we were on vacation. The reason for this was because the last time we took a vacation the apartment walls took three days to cool down with the air conditioners running at high throughout those three days. We left the air con at economy level 20 degrees and it was just right when we returned this time. I also kind of like wasting Saudi energy for nothing. It's my way of payback. I do this with water too. I don't care about the environmental effects on Saudi, they deserve it, even worse for that matter.

Grendal....
Just out of interest (not being rude), but WHY are you there if you dislike it so much? Is the money, etc so important that you'll put up with anything?
Just a rhetorical question really.. please don't be offended! |

Dear Grendal,
How odd - most of us, of course, chose Saudi for the night life - or for the waters:
Renault: And what in heaven's name brought you to Casablanca?
Rick: My health. I came to Casablanca for the waters.
Renault: The waters? What waters? We're in the desert.
Rick: I was misinformed.
Regards,
John |

Sorry I just spazed away on the $ key. You could say that, but not monthly. Annual would be more precise.
... and yes John ... I was misinformed also before venturing here for my health

They must be sending more out now. This is the first year in about the last 5 that I didn't get such email. |
