@expatluke: I'm not offended at all. It's just appalling to see some people with higher education have the need to compare themselves with others related to TEACHING in Vietnam.
I have a non-related degree in astrophysics.
I also have 3 Ph.Ds all non-related: entrepreneurship, common sense, and sense of humor.
I could probably learn to fly a plane in a week (taking-off and flying), but landing would take another week or two more.

I don't understand why it's appalling. I didn't start the discussion, I'm just adding to it. |

That's true, but who has 7 years of education in TESOL? Even a masters only typically takes a year. |
My TESOL degree took 3 years. Of course it could be accelerated, but I've never heard of one only taking 1 year. If it only took 1 year, I'd imagine pretty much everyone would get their MA in TESOL before coming to teach. |
One year full time or 2 years part time is pretty standard for an MA in TESOL or Applied Linguistics. In the UK, at least. Look them up. They also don't generally accept anyone without prior teaching experience. |

A big part of hiring here is making sure that the hires can also interact with the staff and coworkers.
I've hired staff with masters and Delta's only to have to let them go because they are such a pain in the ass no one could deal with them. Same staff also decided to take another teachers desk because she had more qualifications and thought she could move out a teacher who had been with us for 2 years. When I sat her down to fire her she was not able to understand how I could not take her side as she was more qualified that the other teacher. She was really upset to find that I was able to fire her with only a TESOL and unrelated degree, but I enjoyed it a lot.
I think for the typical mill that is hiring, what type of employee the person will be also matters a lot. Will they get on with the VN staff? Can they deal with the VN way of doing things? Schedule changes and yes, if the students will like their classes. |

Good post - If I had of known of all this backstabbing between 'teachers' I would have never gotten into this industry. So much petty mindedness.
Lighten up ffs. |

I've actually never encountered these kinds of problems in the workplace before. Perhaps they've happened but without my knowledge.
But I've found that if you just share a mutual respect for others you work with you won't care about whether they're more less qualified than you. Like I've said, I've worked with several teachers in the past who are less qualified than me. Some even without degrees. But I have learned A LOT from them.
Actually, reading this thread you can see it was someone who was "underqualified" who got upset when someone else mentioned their qualifications. So obviously it goes both ways.
Adding to your situation, I think a lot of the superiority complexes comes from the way many jobs are advertised. Often times an advertisement will say "Salary negotiable based on qualifications" or "$15 to $20 per hour based on qualifications." These adds to the idea that if you are more qualified, you are more valuable or a better teacher than those under you. After all, I'm being paid more right?!?
I think we've all met the so-called "teachers" here in Vietnam who are just here to drink, chase women, and live a comfortable life-style on a lower income. We can probably all agree that these cowboys, backpackers, deadbeats are deserving of our scorn. These kinds range from the highly qualified to the high school GEDs.
But if someone truly cares about their job and makes an honest effort to do their job to the best of their ability, it would be hard not to get along these types of people.

Jeezus Ramen and Luke, get off of each other's case already. |
I'm actually trying very hard to be the bigger man. I've already ignored several of his comments in other threads. I still don't entirely understand why he took an issue with me in the first place.
So you are established in Vietnam now, Rusty? |
Neither do I. To be honest, both you and Ramen seem like cool cats in your own right so I'll otherwise not get involved.
Yeah. Got a bedroom, renting a moto and working at two schools. One is a language mill and the other is an honest to goodness college. Just waiting for that first paycheck/bank deposit. |

Congrats, sounds like it all happened pretty fast, right? How long was it from landing in Vietnam to getting the job? |

Two members of the Vietnam forum will be leaving us very soon if they keep up the petty arguments and insults.
Please advise the Mod Team if they continue. |
