My job search in China is going belly up and I need a plan B.

I have an MA in English and 1.6 years of EFL experience, but no snazzy tefl cert unfortunately.

Could anyone offer any advice as to what kind of opportunities(if any) await me if I arrive on a tourist visa?

Thanks for any information.

I believe (and if I'm wrong someone should correct me) that you're not technically even supposed to look for a job with a tourist visa but people do it quite often. Working is definitely a bad idea. If you had a few more years teaching you would probably be able to work at an international school since you have a masters.

No TEFL necessary for Japan. Just a BA and your MA+experience will be more than enough to get you callbacks. Tourist visa is a bad idea. Better to apply from abroad although you can always take a trip to Korea and change status there. Immigration is not too fond of this though.

Your experience and qualifications are more than adequate for an entry-level job.

That's very out of date. These days there's no problem, in principle, with changing your visa status while you're in Japan. The biggest problem is the delay between getting the job offer and getting the visa.

Good to know. Had no idea that part of the law had changed with the reforms.

At the risk of sounding like a smug know-it-all, the "law" (I think it was actually the rules produced internally by the Justice Ministry, but they have the power of law) changed some time ago.

When I came to Japan 3 years ago, there was no problem with my coming in on a tourist visa and then changing to a work visa a few weeks after I arrived.
